Ignition Timing

Ok, so I did a search but didn't really figure this out...

I have an '88 n/a that has HORRIBLE emmissions...So I'm checking the timing today. I let the car warm up and it idles relatively smooth at about 750. I check L1 and it looks to be dead on...hiting the Right-most timing mark on the pulley. T1 however does not appear to be hiting near a timing mark at all... and T2 is not even firing. Is my trailing coil pack going bad here or what? This should not affect my emmissions this much should it? any ideas?

BTW the Emmissions is at 1620 PPM HC and 6.1% CO both are WAY above legal limit.

Trailing plugs not firing will hurt your emissions. That, as I understand it, is their main reason for exsitence; to improve combustion.

I have a car that is doing the exact same thing as yours right not. T1 is dead and T2 does not fire evenly, missing often. I have not found any coils to replace these to see if that fixes the problem. I however really do not think the problem is with the coils as they test out OK.

If you figure out your problem please post what you did to fix it. I will do likewise.

heh...installed new NGK plugs and Accel wires today. All timing is dead on now. We'll see about emmissions in a week or so...
