if DUAL is so great why did mazda put a SINGLE in FD??
#26
Duals offer a better and broader power range on a N/A, that is why its on the FC. Not only was it a styling thing, but it was for more power on the N/A's, why was a single used on the FD? As many have said, the main reason was weight, as well as cost. Not to mention the design of the gas tank and other things under the FD would not even make it feasible. For turbo cars a nice big, straight single pipe works best. On N/A's a true dual system works best? If the duals suck so much then why would Mazda bring it back on the RX-8? The highest horse power N/A rotary to date?

Man, you guys are funny. Size or lodness of your exhaust don't mean crap. It is based on the flow of your exhaust. The more free flowing it is, the better off you are. For example: HKS makes some great aftermarket exhaust systems that are very quiet.
Now, if you want more power..... Then get a turbocharger/raise compression/raise boost/add NOS if you want/ etc/etc/etc.
I don't know what the argument is here?!?!

Of course single is lighter. Some people think it lookes better than duel.
Of course dual looks kool, and some people really believe it is better than a single.
Whatever!
A point to prove on an exhaust is this: People think Bigger/Louder is better/faster for an exhaust. WRONG! It is based on how free flowing it is.
Riceboys prove this theory Every day!!! However, they are dead wrong after they get their *** kicked by a Corvette.

Single exhaust is the way to go... Dual has too many curves, creates turbulence in the air flow just to mention a few... A straight 2 1/2" or 3" is a lot better period. I have had them both, the performance increase is noticeable.

There's something about seeing duals out the back of a car. It's just neat. Look a the new M3 duals from the muffler. Single exhaust looks weird, especially the one's with 4-5" tips. Can you imagine a Corvette with single exhaust. How about the Porsche Turbos in th '80s- single exhaust. Most owners added a B&B exhaust with duals.
First off, there's no room under the FD because the engineers didn't intend the car to have dual tailpipes. If they wanted that, they would have designed the car with them. Less weight/cost, definitely-another reason is that some 2nd generations, with the high exhaust temps. heated the fuel in the tank to abnormal levels. I'm sure Mazda didn't want to go thru that again.
