is there a way to tell the difference between a s4 and s5 turbo motor just by looking at the block?

The metering oil pump. The S4 will have a metal rod connecting it to the throttle body, the S5 is electric and will not have that rod. The S5 upper intake manifold is a fair bit taller, also.
