Unhappy I really need to know if I can beat this!

Well, there is the redneck(no offense anyone), who drives a ford(go figure...a redneck who drives a ford...who'd a thought)...he drives a ford thunderbird. He said it is all stock and he wanted to race me for $500(back when my motor still ran)...and said he didn't want to see under my hood..he didn't care. I now have researched this car, and I see it in town a lot, it has to be one of those super coupe version....its SUPERCHARGED from the factory. I ran the specs, it shows 210HP and 315 lb-ft torque...and its an automatic that weighs about 3100lbs. Now, when I get my motor in and done(thanks to Dave) I am really considering racing him. I mean, I'm putting the JSPEC GT-X Turbo motor in w/ full exhaust intake, fuel mods, and my car only weighs about 2100lbs w/ me in it!!! So what do you guys think my chances are...should I try to get that $500 or should I quit before I start????

I SAY....

WASTE HIS ASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!
The pros outweigh the cons here.....I think he might just be another "Redneck" (No offense either) Lookin at your car not knowing what its capable of while he spits his tobaccee in a bottle under his front seat. Whooop his ****. I can eat z28's and 5.0's in my FC and i dont have half the **** you have done to your car...No worries!!!

Your close...its an 89 to 91 TurboII motor, known as the GT-X if its a Jspec. Here is a list of what is going in my car:

89+ GT-X Long Block
2.5" Downpipe
2.5" Straight Pipe to APEXi N1 Dual
720cc to 800cc Secondaries controlled by APEXi S-AFC
GReddy BOV
GReddy Boost controller
16" Perma-cool fan
Crane HI-6 ignition w/ jacobs wires and DENSO plugs
Bonez intake w/ custom intake box & hose
Thats the big stuff, I'm hoping to boost at LEAST 10-11PSI and have close to 250HP, but I dunno..we'll see. As long as I get a 14.0 in the 1/4mile..I'll be

Oh...and my car started as the 1988 SE...the door jam calculates the weight at 1,980...but w/ the sound system and just me in the car(and the new AL hood opposed to the Steel one)...it should weigh about 2100lbs. I'll weigh it when everything is done.

THANKS for the encouragement...I could REALLY use $500...maybe a bigger turbo...

a 89-91 eh.. then you'll DEFINITELY have more power and less wieght...
All his torque is only good for wheel spinning and he may get a jump from like 0-30 if you don't launch well.

Practice your driving and you'll have a 100% chance of winning!

2100 lbs? Unless you're doing some serious weight reduction modifications your car's weight isn't that low.

I'm guessing your car weighs ~2600-2700 lbs, stock.

I'm serious on the weight! The door jam says its 1980lbs...and that is vehicle specific weight. My car is an 88 SE w/ no power options(besides a sunroof), its not very heavy at ALL. And I have removed some stuff: A/C, rear foam stuff(cant remember what its called), air pump, I'll now have an AL hood, lighter wheels, stock radio for single head unit, straight pipe weighing 8lbs versus the cats that are over 20! The little stuff counts man. My dads GS 1st gen weighed 1600 I think and it had a bunch of options, its all in which car you get.

we already had an argument about this on the mrccfl list, the car weighs 2600 lbs. 1980 is GVWR, Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. It doesn't deal w/ the weight of the vehicle. I believe it is the weight capacity of the car with driver, fluids, and cargo.

A Miata isn't that light!

Well with boosted cars it is always hard to tell what type of power someone is going to be putting down.

With the T-bird Super coupe he can run a smaller pulley on the supercharger and get more boost. Someone has one of those cars running in the 11's! It is a heavy car though, probably around 3500lbs, you should be able to beat it unless his car has some really major mods.

OTOH, your car weighs A LOT more than 2100lbs, I guarantee it. I have a 87 TII that is partially stripped...
NO heater
a/c
spare tire
jack
rear wiper
cruise
emissions
single 3" straight pipe exhaust
smaller battery
lightweight flywheel
lighter wheels
stereo and speakers
front and rear washer tanks, etc.

It still has the carpet, door panels, seats, power windows, mirrors and sunroff though, the whole idea is that it will look like a street car but it isn't. The dash is there but there is absolutely nothing behind it but a bare firewall.

My 87 TII weighs 2560lbs with an empty tank, your 88 is going to weigh more. I weighed an 86 sport package that was completely stock, don't remember how much gas was in it but it weighed 2600lbs even with no PS and no sunroof and aluminum hood, that is probably a pretty good wieght to start estimating from on your 88, of course stereo stuff, PS, sunroof all add to that.

Well I am sorry, but I wouldn't believe he is stock. Either he has plenty of money or he is not stock. Or he could just be an idiot, but even idiots like to keep their money I think. You should run him fairly easily, IF he is stock. I highly doubt that though. Might wanna look into his car more. I know I don't have $500 to give away.

I don't have $500 to throw away either!!! He says its all stock, and everyone I talk to says its all stock. It's not really his, its the "shop" car, his dad owns like 2 shops in my town and his uncle has another one(which is where this car stays when its not driven)....I'm telling ya, I do research

Well, unlike him..I WILL look under his hood...I can't believe he said he didn't care to see under mine...how does he know I wouldn't have been running a HUGE garret and NOS or something, lol...oh well...I'll still have to put some thought into this one....

DO IT!!!! I've seen these things run at the track and NEVER seen one even break into the 14's. Common 1/4 time for one can be anywhere from 16 to 15.3 (15.3 is the fastest I have seen). If you have a J spec with minor bolt ons you will kill him!!!!

have fun!!!!!

I'd be careful, man...

You don't neccesarily know what he's runnin' under the hood. Could be a real sleeper, ya never know. Most idiots like that don't offer race money unless they KNOW they can win. If you race, I really hope you beat him. I live in Idaho, and my car gets called rice all the time. Win one for the team, son.

I was thinkin'...

Pound for pound, you should and WILL waste his ***. I don't think that's a question. Before you race, make sure to get him to say that he's COMPLETELY stock (especially in front of his buddies). IF he beats you, tell him to **** himself, and crawfish on the bet. He can't beat you if he's stock. Take some friends for backup. Oh, and carry a gun, if you can.
