Ouch. That thing is pretty rough... but it would clean up and look pretty good next to my other GTUs:

FYI: I paid $1800 for my GTUs three weeks ago. Mint shape, 98K miles, needs nothing but an antenna... Humm, I could use a parts car. Plus its only 350 miles away from me! I drove 450 miles for the red one. Oh, mine also came with A/C

It's all about the gearing. The GTUs started off as the lite GTU base model. Then add the Turbo II suspension, 4 piston brake calipers with vented disks, a 4.3 LSD in the rear, a special set of gears in the transmission, and an Aluminum hood.
A/C was an option, but the sunroof was not. (Although there were a few with sunroofs) The car also came with the preferred speed sensitve power steering instead of the RPM sensitive.
Driving a GTUs is an experiance. It's different than every other NA I've driven. 5th gear is actually useful! IE: you're on the interstate, you want to pass, you just hit the pedal and go! No downshift needed and you're doing 100 mph! I love it.
as for being rare? Estimates have GTUs production around 2500 units for 89 and about 250-300 for 1990. This is about the same number as the 10th AE in 88.

The deals are out there!!! The owner of my GTUs was a moron, but he did pretty good maintenance on the car. The car had a couple small problems when I got it, but it only took a weekend to bring it back.

Yo,
Wozzoom, good score!! I paid lots more for mine. Looks like in great shape, I'm glad you're having fun with it.
Your numbers might be a tad high for production, best guesses for 1989 is around 1000-1200, and for 1990 it's documented at 100 units.
I liked what you said about the ride in a GTUs, it's just a different beast from any other NA RX-7. I'm diggin' mine.

No mention of a 88 GTU but I seem to have bought one and it is sitting in my front yard right now so they must exist.....I paid for mine a little more than the average joe but the engine only has 2K miles on it.....Working on the body right now and adding some mods this winter...

Exact production numbers are one thing that I've never been able to find any information on. I've heard serveral people say about 2500 GTUs cars, but that might have included Canadian cars as well. However, nobody has ever been able to nail down how many 10th AE's and GTUs were actually brought to the states.

GTUs's were special
GTUs's were only 89-90
1000 in '89
100 in '90 (unclaimed by mazda but they exist)
Your's is just a regular N/A model, normal tranny, normal rear end, etc etc.
the "s" makes it cool
