I knew our locks sucked, but DAMN!

I've heard that many people can open the locks on other FC's with their own keys. Well, this takes the cake. I was moving my 7 today and had the key in the ignition to keep the steering from locking. When I took the key out, I realized that I had used the key to my MX-3 out of habit. Thats right, my MX-3 key worked in my ignition. It was a little stiff, but still. Wow.

A phillips? I could see a flat-head maybe...
I actually locked my keys in the damn car today. Luckily I had the door panel off so it was easy to jimmy the lock.

My '87 T2 key and '86 n/a key don't seem interchangable between each other.

bunch of ignorant people here in this thread. :shakes head:

As covered countless times... (yep I guess we have to do it again)

The only reason the lock is able to be unlocked with anything but the factory correct key is because the locks have not been properlly maintained.

If the lock cylinder is clean and properlly lubed. There is never the problem of the wrong key opening the car.

See the lock cylinders get full of crap and dirt. The tumbler keys stick in the unlocked postion so that anything will turn the key cyl.

clean your locks out instead of talking crap. If you or the last owner maintained them, you wouldn't have the problem isn the first place.

And finaly the odds of a factory key duplicating on the FC is 1 in 20,000.

is there a way to clean them out after the damage is done? like sticking lube on the factory key and sliding it in and out? or pulling the ignition out and soaking it in a solution? (minus the electrical components)... because every rx7 ive owned has had this problem.. and now that im investing all this money into my car, the last thing i want is someone to just come up and drive off w/ my car because their key fit....... if you say it cant be done, then im just gonna buy a brand new key lock set from mazda....

If the damage has already been done and they are locked up you best bet is to remove the key cyl and spray and spray and spray a degreaser/cleaner into the cyl alternating with putting the key in and out to loosen everything up.

Once it is all loosened then clean out and spray in a dry lubricant (like spray graphite or spray silicon). DO NOT USE WD-40, TriFlo, or any simular wet lubricant. It will only gum the whole thing up again. Dry lubricants only.

I cleaned/replaced my lock cylinders, and have no problems with other keys as of yet. Of course, it's not like someone would steal my car, it looks stolen already.
