Is it a new starter, and if its not then are u sure its in working condition? Im thinking maybe the grinding noise was in the starter itself, especially if the flywheel is ok. Good luck!

Obviously something is not matched correctly. Make sure that each piece is correct (n/a, turbo, series 4 or 5). Perhaps it is a different flywheel on the car? Perhaps the starter itself is not working?
Give us some more info and we can help but not knowing anything I can't really tell you anything except guesses.

Three wires to the starter -> Ground, Power, and Ignition (from the key in start). If those are good, check the fusible links which are in the engine bay, right above the trailing coil (slightly back from the wheel on driver side). If that doesn't work check the fuses by your dead pedal. It's a pretty simple device so that's about all to look at.
Couldn't hurt to clean the battery poles and the connection to the starter.
Good luck.

Sounds like it is flooded though. If the AFM was disconnected it would only run for a few seconds and then shut off.

Just remove the airbox and check to see if the AFM is plugged in and fit snuggly. Other than that check for vaccuum leaks. Check the simple things first.
