Drifting is a hobby to the enthusiasts that enjoy it. Sure, it destroys rubber, creates unnecessary strains on vehicles, and generally isn't the optimal path during a timed event, but so what? It's fun. However, driving on public roads is the issue at hand, and the optimal line or driftability of the road are moot. 787B: However safe you claim your 'maneuver' to be, the fact that it was even near a residental area proves that it was not safe, no matter how many hundreds of times you took the corner. I'm not bashing you, but I don't think you're getting the point of the argument. After all, you made the post; to prove what, I don't know. Maybe that sort of thing belongs in the lounge? If you're going to screw around in your car, drive to a less risky environment. I've got two different rims on my car to remind me what happens when a 2600lb car passes a 35mph curve sign at 100mph..on a wet road...with complimentary curbs at the end. Stupid? Obviously! But at least the only things in the path of my car were grass, asphalt, concrete, and trees. Well, maybe a squirrel--but definitely not a squirrel riding a bicycle. And yes, I had driven that corner many, many times.

I agree, driving hard on public roads is just plain dumb (street racing or whatever) but I don't think drifting is really rice... after all rice is people who know absolutely nothing about cars (or maybe just enough to make them look really dumb) trying to act like their cars are all fast. They're POSERS. Drifting isn't really poserish, because it does take a lot of skill and some people modify their cars a lot to be good drift machines. No it's not the fastest way around the corner, and I doubt any drifters would claim that. But if oversteer wasn't fun, we would all be driving front-drive Cadillacs (which can be pretty freakin fast, actually) instead of one of the FEW Japanese cars brought to the US that retained its Japanese-spec tailhappiness. (oh, yeah, blah blah rotary engine, that too, but the CHASSIS is really good and should NOT be forgotten!)
I wonder if they'd let me on the autox course with DOT-Rs on the front and dried-out old generic all-season rubber on the rear. Only for the fun runs of course. (Hey we can petition for a new class - SD - Street Drift )

This is getting crazy... Let me just say that neighborhoods can be great fun to fly through in my 7, I love it. I have some great curvy streets near my house and enjoy hittin the corners. Of course you have to be cautious while doing this (best late at night), but it's great fun and I get to enjoy my car. Let the cops give me a ticket if they want to, I love driving hard occasionally, in neighborhoods, on public roads. Thats where I drive. Tell me where a great racetrack is that's close to me and cheap and I'll be there, but I'll still enjoy my TII's performance on the street, where it was built to perform... And let me emphasize that I try to do this somewhat cautiously, but of course it's dangerous, and fun!!

Just use your best judgement. If you screw up, you'll know it. Drifting is fun, powerslides are fun, jumping is fun. Ever notice most fun or exciting things are also a little dangerous...that's what makes them exciting, the element of risk. Just make sure you are really willing to take those risks before you leap into something new.

ah jeez....more drift haters. just because dirfting isnt as fast through corners doesnt mean its stupid and pointless. it takes more skill than any other driving style in my opinion...including grip. there is a lot more involved in getting a car to do a full ***** out smokey drift than there is to clippng apexes and trail braking. and of course anything with corners requieres more skill than drag. yeah it shouldnt be done in neighborhood, yeah its dangerous as all hell. an out of control slide is not uncomon for a drift beginer. thats why when i drift, i do it late at night(midnight or later) on roads that are as desolate as possible. drifting got started on public roads thats where it belongs. track days of drifting are cool, but expensive and for most people they are rare. not everyone has access to a race track to practice drift, much less the money to afford the cost of renting a track for a day. its just like street drag racing...its here and nobody can stop it ever. a responsible driver will keep risks to a minimum, but any spirited driving has risks that are unavoidable. so to all the naysayers, stop wasting your breath and just let people into drift be happy. just leave us alone.

grip vs drift
there is points where you drift in and some that you don't
as if the coner are right a dift will be faster then a grip
it is just how the track is lad out in all
grip is good drift is fun and good
power sild is just for fun no point to that really call it the heavy foot sindrome
this all makes since and is all ture caue si race alot and have fun but if i buy this rx7 i am looking at drifting will be easyer then my toyota supra
oh yae i borke my car doing drift ketp it as 6000 rpm to long i think and spun cyc 2 bareing or the piston pin

Drifting is alot fo fun. So is AutoX. and driving fast in general. Why the hell does everyone freak out about things. If someone post a article or a story of some getting killed during drifts that was an innocent-by-stander then we would all feel bad for that person. But you cant even post about having some fun anymore on this forum with out everyone moms,dads,and grandpas freaking the hell out. RELAX. Rx7 = Fun. Everyone do what you like and if you dont like it don't do it just ease up on people. If you are here to save the world your in the wrong forum.

That's what I'm talking about. When somebody doesn't understand something, they fear it. This turns straight into anger. If somebody#1 hears about somebody#2 hundreds of miles away that had some fun in a way that somebody#1 doesn't care for, it pisses somebody#1 off. They'll have reasons justifying their hatred that seem all sound and rational to themselves. But it's still hatred all the same. Having a difference of opinion is fine and dandy as long as it isn't different than theirs. Uptight people bring everybody else down.
