I am making an entire replacement Carbon Fiber dash!
Just thought Id share this. My car got broken into last Sat and they took everything, so I am taking advantage of the situation and have completely stripped my interior bare, removed all sound tar, and will be having it all stitch welded, then I am gonna sand and paint all the bare metal left behind.
The next big project is a complete replacement dash made out of Carbon. I made the mock up today from cardboard and it looks really good. I expect it to weigh around 15lbs total! Ill post more pics when I am done.

Hey I had the idea to make a fiberglass or carbon fiber dash, but to use the stock one as a mold and to fill in all the vent holes.
Is the stock dash good enuf to be used to make a mold or will it warp? What would you use to fill in the vent holes?

Read up on the subject, practice a few things, and then ask the more advanced problems.
I know Boost will be using a vacuum bagging set-up, which is typically out of the price range of typical home users.

Reason being is that the instrumentation (including gauges, the radio, a/c, etc.) must be secured properly. If not, then they can become projectiles.
Also, assuming that you were involved in a severe accident, carbon fiber creates a "brooming" pattern when it breaks. At the edges of the "brooming" effect, there are tiny splinters. Since your body is composed of carbon, your body will not recognize the splinters as a foreign object.
Your insurance company may also reject your accident claim if they see the carbon fiber dash.

How many of us have ever tasted dash in an accident though?
I think it'd be quite handy to mold in a gauge panel into the dash so that gauges can be installed prior to installation of the dash.

Make the CF dash. People swere they knjow what thier talking about. You think just because an insurance company is going to reject a claim because of a stupid CF dash? If so than still big woop. I would put one in my car in a second. Business is Business

Von: When I was referring to an accident claim, I was talking about a large accident. One, where a person is physically hurt at the scene, severe whiplash, large amount of damage to the vehicles. I was not referring to a simple paint repair type accident. In large wrecks, your insurance company WILL take notice of the carbon fiber dash. Keep in mind that Boostmotorsport is stripping off the ABS plasic and replacing it w/ carbon fiber. If anything, the insurance company can cease to cover YOU for any injuries that you substain, while (assuming full coverage) still covering your occupants and others.

I've thought about how nice it would be to get rid of the stock dash for something carbon fiber or fiberglass, but I know the cost would be up there (especially the cf!), hell if you can do it mad props!

Sounds like a nice idea, and I do think that Boost can pull it off, but I agree with everyone in saying that very few could afford it. I say a Grand at least would not be out of the question. Now as for saftey: How would the CF be more dangerous? Dosen't it take massive amounts of force to crack the stuff? I assume taht if you are in an accident that is that drastic as it cracks the CF, I say that you don't even need to worry about it. You'll be too dead to make an insurance claim anyway.

whats the point? i mean C/F is cool and all, but i cant see any logical gains from this on a STREET car.its a whole lot of effort, time and money to make something that is going to be nothing more than pretty. go for it if you want, but i just dont get it.
btw-what makes the dash so heavy is the structural reinforcement behind it. which is what also makes the dash safe. if BoostMotorsports builds his dash without the reinforcement he will prolly SOL when it comes to insurance, not to mention hed be pretty dumb to have removed it in the first place.
