Did your throwout bearing make noise or anything? Usually when they're getting bad they start to make a whirling noise... and you can hear them generally when you're idling at a stop. So, if N isn't N, then you're essentially stuck in second gear. And I don't believe anybody will know what it is 100% until they open the tranny/clutch system... it may or may not be the throwout bearing. The T bearing is, however, an essential part of the clutch system... so... there ya go.

Just get a new tranny and replace the clutch bearings while you're at it... S4 N/A tranny's can be found for about $50 and the bearings are pretty cheap through ACT...

What do you guys think reading from above dose this sound like the problem.
now did you FILL the trany from the SIDE of the trany??( square bolt on the driver side of the trany somewher ein the middle??)

the fluid area under the shifter is separate from the main trany filling area, filling from the shifter area only fills the shift tower area.....

sounds like you filled from the top, only and the trany is empty on the inside, and thats why it locked up...

this doenst sound liek any sort of throwout bearing issue to me at all

I'm betting your tranny's bearings took a crap - what kind of clutch did you have put in?

One week after my CFDF clutch install the tranny took a dump - it was old and worn and the force from the new clutch and my spirited driving took it's toll. $200 later and I sourced a decent junkyard tranny that worked out ok.

I had a VW beetle where the throwout bearing failed - car couldn't shift gears and had to start it in gear. needed a push start to get it home (stalled out going up a hill in 3rd)

quick question: did you align the clutch before tightening the pressure plate? regardless it doesn't sound like a throwout bearing to me considering you can engage/disengage the clutch. Sounds to me that either your 1st/3rd(?) shifter rod/fork has come loose INSIDE the tranny OR a synchro is fried. (do rx7's use synchros? I hear people talk alot about straight mesh here..) please correct me if I'm wrong ~rich

Did you fill the tranny up from the shifter **** like Kompressor said???? That would be a definite problem... it IS a seperate reservoir. Yikes... and some cars aren't so I could see this being a major mixup. The tranny has a check plug and drain plug. But it definitely sounds like something internal in the tranny.

WTF is up with the WAG's???

I put money it's the pilot bearing.
Did you change it?
If you did, did you man-handle the trans back in?
If you force the transmission in, the pilot bearing tends to get damaged.
Just a small nick can eventually lead to the delicate pilot bearing disintegrating.

It's maybe $20 max for the pilot bearing and seal.
It's a lot of work to pull the trans back out, but it's a big satisfaction fixing it yourself!

Dude, just fix it.
You've done the clutch job yourself?
You can do it again.

Good luck!

I'll lock this thread if I see another for sale ad in it from you.

If you wish to sell the car and not fix it, then you need to be posting in the For Sale section. Not in the 2nd gen technical section!
