I took a pic at one point of my S4 t2 rotors because one had smooth sides (the combustion sides) and the other rotor had very fine machined grooves in it. I was told that the grooved one goes in the rear housing and smooth up front, that mazda did that from factory.
Now if you mean on 1 rotor, which way it is supposed to be facing in its housing I don't think it matters. they look identical on both sides and its the side seals that hold the compression anyway. each side gets seals so it shouldn't matter when changing the bearing. just make sure you have a matching set of rotors, there is a letter on the face of each. they need to match or be within 1 letter of eachother.

Both rotors are Identical. But when you build an Engine you have to take the first rotor you put in, and make sure the oil control ring (SPRINGS) are put in the correct way for the rear rotor since the gear side is pointing to the rear, the rotor will rotate in a different direction than the front rotor that the gear side is facing Front.
That's why you need to make sure the Oil control ring (SPRINGS) are put in correctly for whatever rotor you choose to be the rear rotor, Or the front rotor. or the springs will slide and pop out of the slot if its rotating the incorrect way from how you put the Oil control ring springs in.
Because of the Hook in the springs that grab the Small hole that is made for them you dont want it Pushing on the hole. the oil control ring springs want to be Pulling so the oil control rings link up to the spring so they wont rotate or they will wear out and then you will have a smokey engine..
