How to Tap a Bolt????

I'm trying to secure the exhaust manifold back into place on my freshly rebuilt 13b but the front lower bolt has been snapped off and is just inside it's cavity. I don't know exactly how to tap a bolt so can anyone give me and references or know where I can get a tool for it??

yikes, this happened to me too... kinda... except that we didn't snap the bolt, but it was crossthreaded in.... we managed to get the bolt out (you can try drilling it out)... we used an air drill to drill/clean out the threads before we tapped the new threads in... you need to get the thread tapping tool from the auto store or hardware store. keep in mind what size threads you want to use, etc... it's really not THAT bad, it's just a pain in the *** because it an awkard position to be reaching.

I would try JB-Welding the other half of the bolt back on, and twisting it out before you re-drilled and tapped.

Ok, here is what you do drive the car down to a welding shop or muffler shop, or better yet rent a mig welder for $45.00 for the day at a local rental shop. Take youe exhaust flange off and tack weld a nut on the end of the bolt or another bolt to it ,if it is broken flush to the engine. Then just use wrench take it out like a normal bolt. If that want work but a drill bit that cuts through steel quick. and drill down into it and use a easy out. Better yet I have used this trick too, take asmall butane torch and heat it up real hot after you drilled it before it cools put the easy out into it and spray some wd-40 onto as you bring it out this cools it and loosens it from the fumes. There some good tricks from a machinst.

i didn't break it off actually. I bought it from someone and didn't notice that the bolt was broken. And i can't exactly drive it anywhere because the motor is sitting about 75 feet apart from the car it's supposed to go into.

Thanks for the tips though, i'll try em out

Yo, try to use an easy out(aka screw extractor) before welding or drilling. Its basically a "drill bit" that will grab it and turn it out. Here is the link for sears:

Good luck,
