Fix the broken cooling system perhaps?
Get a new rad, or get your old one rodded out. Replace all hoses, new thermostat, and of course new coolant.
Don't use additives to combat an improperly functioning system.

Why do you wnat it to run cooler? Is the car overheating?
It's a myth that a system with a cooler operating temp actually moves more heat energy. In actuality, the hotter you run you system (within the limits of your coolant) the more heat is transfered out of your engine. The temp differential between the coolant and the air is greater, so a greater temp drop can be achieved through the radiator.
The problem with this is it increases the chance of your coolant boiling. (or localized boiling) Read the writeup on pineapple racings web-site under Evans coolant for a better descriptiion.

Two years ago a team at the Indy 500 (don't remember which team) had a motor test 15hp above any other motor from the same mfg with the same setup. The crew cheif said "I don't know what all the fuss is about. We hadn't run the engine at all, and everyone here knows that a cooler engine makes more power."
Get a colder operating thermostat if you want to run colder (assuming everything is running according to spec). However, I will say this. I am driving around with a stuck open thermostat. The car runs decently most days, but last week the temps were over 100F and for the first time since I bought the car, my engine temp was right in the middle, and boy was she smooth. If you are going to run at high RPM's for extended periods of time, you'll want to run cooler ust to keep your engine cool. If, however, you are going to be cruising at 4k rpm, leave your cooling system stock(or near stock). As for the idea that a hotter radiator radiates more heat, NOT A CHANCE. Unless your coolant reaches ambient air temp while passing through the radiator, there is no way the temp of the water will affect its ability to be cooled. Again, your car likes to run at stock temp, so encourage it to do so.

What Subscription?
Run an Efficient coolant such as EVANS NPG+, Pressure test the system first to ensure it is in working condition. Check your OIL Cooler operation (30% of the engines cooling). Make sure the fins are not clogged with crap. Make sure your air baffle/undertray is installed, Fan Shroud in place?

Fins not clogged with crap?
My rad fins have a nice layering of snot from a leak in the front p/s lines that I used to have (patched it.)
Care to recommend a way to clean it without damaging the fins? Yup, I have compressed air to blast it with, but I'm wondering if there's some stuff I can spray it with first to loosen up the goo. Fantastik? Scrub-Free (meant for bath/shower)? I don't want to pooch the metal or the fins.

1 degree assuming a perfect transfer of heat. If my coolant is 50 degrees above ambient air temp, I gaurentee you will get more than a 1 degree drop.
The temprature drop is the ammount of HEAT ENERGY removed from the motor. I learned this from a friend whos been auto-racing for 30 years. A radiator is just a heat exchanger.
Don't mistake the temp of the air charge for the temp of the engine. A cooler air charge will always make more power. The Indy car your speaking of made more hp because of a cooler intake charge as well as the ability to advance the timing of the engine.
As for what temp your engine will run best at, kristopher_d is right, the stock setting is best. But only because the engine ecu has been optomized for that temp. That optimization is mostly due to the effectivness of the coolant media.
As for overall thermal efficiency in an engine, higher temps are best, if the car has been optomized to run at that higher temp. However, than you get into other problems with engine longevity etc.
The reason I wanted to reply was to prevent you from going to a cooler thermostat, (or running a stuck one like kristopher_d ) because youu will move less heat from the engine if you do so.

it sounds a small bit like the water pump belt is slipping. Has the belt been changed recently? Are you running the air pump?
when was the last time you had your coolant flushed?
Have you checked your fan-clutch?

Question here. On my car(88 N/A) I blew the rear rotor. I am still able to get my car started and running on the front rotor. However, the engine will start to overheat after of only 15-20 min of idling. I do not see any coolent leaking, the hoses are very warm to the touch. Just wondering what if anyone had any idea what this could be. My new engine is on the way, and I plan on replacing the thermo, hoses, and boiling the radiator clean. I most wanted to see if anyone had an idea what it could be right now, also could I damage anything right now with my car running hot(I dont car about the engine). Finaly, I never had a problem with overheating before my engine blew. Also my car was sitting for about 2 months, I started about 3 times durring those 2 months.
thanks
