Question How to remove the oil filler pipe?

I´m just installing a new engine in my 1987 rx but I can not pull out the oil filler pipe from the old engine to put it in the new one.

How to do it? any idea? some advice?

maybe I´m not strong enough.

Thanx,RT

Its just pressed in. It slides straight out, but it isnt nearly that easy. In my experience(4 engines in the past few months), it is pressed in VERY tightly. Ive found that tapping it back and forth with a hammer does a nice job. Dont tap too hard, and make sure the filler cap is NOT in when youre tapping on it. It will break the cap(ask me how I know). Once you get it out, clean it up real good, and it should just slide right into the new engine. You might want to put a little gasket maker on it though.

So you live in Caracas, my dad used to fly there on business regularly. He works for Gulfstream/Flight Safety.

Thanks buddy, I will try that way.

My brother and I bought this 1987 N/A RX-7 with a blown engine so we are repairing it.
We have a touring 1993 too since 1 year ago, but we don´t know about the 2° gen. tricks, mods and reliability.

Any other suggestion about installing my new (mazda remanufactured) engine?

I clean the fuel injectors and oil injectors.
New gaskets.
New clutch.

All the little hoses are damaged (oil, fuel, air) should I buy the mazda original ones or replace them with aftermarket ones?

How many miles can do a remanufactured engine?

Yes, I live in Caracas and I like airplanes, I´m private pilot but as I can not afford and airplane I have a RX-7.

Is your dad a pilot?

My dad is a pilot. He got his ATP a few months ago, and has been flying the G IV's he teaches on occasion. He flew Rush Limbaugh(sp?) around for a weekend.

I dont think Mazda OEM matters that much on hoses, unless the aftermarket ones arent pre-formed. Get the pre-formed hoses, it will save you lots of heartache.

A rebuilt motor can last a very long time, as long as the original engine, possible longer. It all depends on how it is taken car of. Take care of it, and you should not have a problem with it.

As far as reliability, and 87 n/a is not even in the same league as an FD. FD's are about as unreliable as RX7's got, and n/a FC'S are about as reliable as they got. There are a few people with 200K+ miles on the original engine on the forum.

Thanks for your advices!

Once I flown in a Gulftream IV -like passenger, I like those wingtips- I´m only allowed to fly cessnas 152 & 172.

Maybe you can come with your dad to Caracas, you will be welcomed.

When I overhauled my engine last spring, I had to strip my end housings of all the items that stick out in order to have them fit the lapping machine. I found that applying a little heat to the end housing area around the filler pipe made it easy to pull out.

He hasnt gone down in a few years, which really sucks, because I could go now. Before I always had school, and I couldnt miss that many days.

My dad also has a Piper Cherokee 140. Very nice plane, he replaced the whole interior and got a nice paint job on it. Looks brand new.

I had the same problem with the oil filler pipe last summer when I was installing a new engine into my 90 GXL. I just went out and bought a new pipe from Mazda. It only cost about $10-15, which was no big deal compared to all the other stuff I had to buy for the engine.

Now is a good opportunity to change those 4 plastic hoses that run from the OMP to the oil injectors. You could also replace the small rubber vacuum lines with silicone hose. Check out hosetechniques.com for hose sizes/prices. You'll need at least 16' of 3.5 mm hose, but better play it safe and get 20'. I just went to Mazda for the larger size vacuum hoses, but you could do silicone too.
