Question how to properly adjust belts

What is the proper way to adjust the belts? Particularly the p/s?

May not be the "proper" way, But I just (for instance, the alternator belt, Which happens to be my only belt) Grab hold of the alternator, pull it as hard as I can and crank the lock screw check and make sure it's not loose, nor super duper tight.. Flexes just a bit..

Typically rule of thumb is about 1/2" of deflection at it's widest span.&nbsp Too loose will cause belts to slip.&nbsp Too tight will kill bearings and pulleys.

you need to loosen the pulley nut enough and then play with the tensioner nut on the top of the p/s bracket until you get the right tension on the belt (~0.5 inches) and then tighten up the pulley not.

make sure the engine is off when you do this

Good way to waste belts and alts/waterpumps/etc.

You need to set tight according to deflection per belt

Follow up question: I pulled the a/c comp the other day. I retightened the p/s belt as per above instruction, Now I'm getting a wierd vibration feel from the gas pedal. Its a very subtle vibration, like something is off balance. I rechecked the belt and its deflecting 1/2 inch. What can it be? Too much torque on the pulley bolt? I didnt touch anything else! Help please.

not likely the P/S, you should only feel something in the steering wheel.

the "wierd vibration" feel from the gas pedal, is prolly do to the A/C.

I dont have the a/c compressor in anymore. I took out the a/c belt and pulley too. The remaining hoses are zip tied down temporarily untill I have time to get those out too.

What can the vibration be?
