How often do you change your oil?
#26
Former Moderator. RIP Icemark.
My recommendations:
3K for a 13BT
5K on a 13B NA.
and anytime it floods (if ever).
And only use a Mazda OEM filter (preferably the Japanese ones) or a Mobil 1 filter.
If the motor is tight, you're just throwing money away to do it more often or using crappy oil or a crappy filter.

Lately the last few changes - it's been every 2500 KMs, always using a mazda brand oil filter from the dealership.
Before that it was every 3500 KMs or so.
At each change I will flush the system by dropping the dirty oil, filling with fresh oil, run the car for a few minutes (leaving old filter on), shutting the car off, and then dropping that oil and doing a regular change. You'd be surprised just how quickly the new stuff dirties up from all the stuff thats hanging around the oil lines, oil cooler, etc.
Quick question -
I have been told this by a few people now - FRAM makes everyone's oil filters - Including Mazda's OEMs. I thought it was BS.. is it?

Opinions are like........
Fram doesn't make everyones filter. Like any filter company, OEMS hunt down lowest bids. This means that the filters at dealerships might be the same or might be different.
I vaguely remember that my last Mazda filter was made either by nippon/denso/mahle/tennex. It definitely was NOT a Fram filter. But, today, who knows!

Ho's and Cadillac Doors
why dont you guys who are adding a quart every day or two just fix your oil leak or get a rebuild, it would be a hell of alot cheaper.
oh, and usually at 3000 miles, maybe before.

When flushing with a quart of fresh oil.... would it be ok to mix oils ?
What I mean is that, I just bought 2 cases of Mobil 1 Syn and was wondering if before putting it in the Mobil 1, I use a cheaper oil to flush, I just dont embrace the idea of a $5 flush everytime to kindly. In other words, can I use a quart of Castrol to do the flushing and then adding the Mobil 1 afterwards.
And please, I dont want to ignite a Syn vs Non-Syn debate either.

I just started using Royal Purple and have 2000 miles now.
Royal Purple claims it's good for 12000 miles, this is a
Synthetic Oil.
I plan on changing it at 6000 mile the first time and then
thereafter every 9000 miles. One thing I have noticed is with
the Castrol 20-50W, I was using a QT every 1000 miles.
With the Royal Purple, after 2000 miles it still reads full
on the dipstick. I assume this synthetic oil is not burning
at the rate the normal oil did.
