1) Running lean, which makes your engine run too hot, frying it. There are only two ways to fix this - add more fuel, or intake less air.
2) Overboosting, which overpressurizes your engine, causing gaskets to blow or rotors to cave-in. There are two ways to fix this, too - Lower the boost, or build the engine to handle more boost (expensive).
Granted, overboosting may also cause the engine to run lean, but you should think of them as separate issues. Also, there are other dangers to your engine, such as detonation, oil starvation, overheating, etc., but I think most people already understand them.

In answer to your question, how much horsepower increase will I get from a new air filter? Not enough for you to notice.
(This does not apply to the turbo guys, as the air filter is only indriectly responsible for the increase in power, the actual extra power comes from the increase in boost.)
Not saying its not worthwhile, as it makes an ideal mod to build upon, but don't expect to put it in and be amazed by the gobs of extra power. If you really wanna know what it'll feel like, just stretch a piece of screen with an elastic over your AFM and go for a trip around the block. (not a good idea for all the time).

BTW. I have an 89TII...
So, it seems like a new air filter would increase my power somewhat.

Even a K&N drop-in filter is almost worhtless. The airbox is THAT restrictive. This is why a cone intake is so revered, as it ditches the stock airbox.
Go ahead and change your air filter, but don't expect any power or boost increase unless you go with a cone intake.

Thanks for the tip!
I will definately replace the stock airbox with a cone filter. Is the Apex any good?

Actually, I doubt it. The stock airbox is the restriction. There is hardly any comparable restrcition in a dirty air filter.

Just buy a bolt-on attachment (www.k2rd.com sells these, and others) and then go to your local store and buy a K&N cone filter. Unless, of course, 1/10 of a horsepower is worth $100 to you... lol.

www.knfilters.com
I just looked through the custom ones and ordered an RR-2801 (I believe). It's got a 2/34" opening, 5-7/8 major dia., down to a 5-1/4" dia. in 5" of Filter Length. Open "Velocity Stack" and red surround. Looks like you can find just about any kind you want there. good luck, I'm basically on my own with my job here

I gotta say that any schwag 15$ filter adapter and 15$ Tenzo, Akimoto, Ractive, HP, or Any other Crapper filter setup will perform within .75 HP of any of these 150$+setups. As long as its not foam you are counting HP/$. And $ can be spent better otherwisw. **** KITS!!!
