"Did any of you have the vert when it was NA?"
I did, for 10 years. I did the lighten flywheel, RB downpipe/presilence, and K&N which is pretty much all you can do to a stock NA to improve performance. Since doing the TII swap, it really IS that much better.
I've wanted one for since 1990. That year, seeing a Billboard while driving from Heathrow Airport advertising the "Turbo Carrera RX7" is what got me hooked.
"Verts are the only 2nd gen I would bother converting to turbo."
I couldn't agree more since TII's are coups already and that converting a Vert is pretty much the only way to get a TurboVert in the US. Why not just sell your NA coup and buy a TII coup? Certainly the resale value of a stock TII is much better than a TII conversion coup. Conversely, you would certainly get more bang for your buck resale wise on a TurboVert than a Coup conversion for the supply/demand reason there are stock TII's to be had but not stock TurboVerts to be had. So, TII conversion to a coup has always confused me. Different strokes for different folks I guess.
"It really is a shame it never made it here to the states."
Never made it to US shores, it was a Ralph Nader influence thing. But I agree is probably would have been a hot seller. This as, if ever there was a second Gen that needed the extra HP, then it was/is a Vert if for not other reason the extra #300 lbs of weight.
I'm loving mine.

Some people can't find a TII.
Some people can only find TII's with 160000 miles for 3500 dollars and then you have to rebuild.
Most TII are ran hard.
Insurance.
Title swapping
Just 2 having a project car.
You love only your car.
You have built up most of it already.
There are many reasons.

A $28-32K vert would just not have sold, when the Miata was available for under $20K

To add to the thread, it's not my car, but there is a turbo vert running around York, PA. Well, there was.

"There are many reasons."
I get them all you’re saying, especially if you already have invested serious money in paint, interior, sound system, etc in a coup you already own. So, already a keeper that you want to step up performance
Or, you simply may not like convertibles. Confusing, but I'll concede to "the to each their own" argument there too.
But, except for that, if you're going to go through all the trouble to do a swap, why do it to a coup when you could do it to a vert? Virtually the same cost to buy, same time, effort, and cost to swap, you end up with a car with much better resale value, and you can get your hair dirty while driving it around.
Said differently, and to answer my question with a question.
At any Wankelfest, if a TurboVert and a Turbo Swapped coup are parked next to each other, both in similar cosmetic condition, which will get the most attention?
Hell, I'll be so bold to ask if a true TII and a Turbo Vert were parked next to each other, both in similar condition, which will draw more lookers?
Note to IceMark. You being a TurboVert owner yourself, what do you think about making a sticky thread for posting pics/ownership claim for TurboVerts? Could be interesting.

Here's mine....
Here's my Turbo Convertible. She is a 1988 Convertible mixed with an 1989 Turbo II. Shaved door handles and updated front and rear fascias to 1989 spec as well as Turbo II interior. Power comes from a 3mm ported 13B controlled by Wolf3D engine management and a modified stock turbo setup. Intercooling courtesty of one decent size (big, not huge) HKS FMIC. Spark provided by MSD Digital DIS-4 and MSD SS Blaster Coils.

Here is my Turbo vert, I bought it in 2000 and it has been my ongoing project ever since.
1st engine- Added RB header and presilencer and ran 75hp shot of N20, lost coolant seal in 03'
2nd engine- Jspec TII engine/tranny/diff W/ Intake/Exhaust and Rtek 1.7@ 13PSI~Killed by boost creep 05'
3rd engine- Self done Atkins full rebuild of Jspec using the original high comp. S4 N/A 9.4:1 compression rotors and new rotor housings. Also streetported the irons using Mazdatrix template. Rtek 2.0 beta ~ Disassembled in 06'after 12,000 miles due to stuck side seal.
4th engine-Rebuilt with RX8 eccentric shaft , hardened stationary gears, new rotor bearings and all new side seals and springs. BNR stage IV hybrid turbo and Greddy V-Spec intercooler added and controled by Rtek 2.0 and S-AFC2 using Wideband 02 and EGT

Yeah, I didn't like it at first ..but it looks better in person. The flat curve of the wing works pretty well with the flat curves of the trunk. FWIW - I bought it like that.
If that center post thing was different it'd be much cooler. Although having a huge rear brake light in the middle of the wing is nice to keep people from mashing my rear end.
