How long can a car stay flooded?

can it stay flooded intill you unflood it....or does it just unflood itself after a certain time?

Usually if left overnight, the fuel will evaporate from the housings.

Well the car won't really start with the engine that keeps getting gas upon gas in to it. So basicly short answer unflood it... (>_<)

yeah funny story on THAT one.

12am: after three hours of gran turismo and mountain dew, me and my friend decide that itll be a good idea to go drifting in the rain!

1am: arrive at the big empty parking lot that is lowes hardware. slide around for about 5 minutes before the car oversteers, spins out, and the engine stalls. no problem right? the car wont start, and i had just gotten the RX7 and knew nothing of rotaries flooding

1:35 am: after multiple attempts at starting the car, including push starting, we walk to taco bell to find that they had just closed

2am: back at the car, paul remembers something he heard in Sport compact car, about how one of the writers had put the car in first and pushed it backward to break loose the carbon deposits to get it running. it didnt work

3am: suck up our pride, go to walgreens, call a cab

3:35am: cab arrives, takes us home

4am: sneak into the house where my dad is still asleep (or so i thought)

next three months: grounded from my car except to and from work

but yeah it was just flooded. it started up just fine the next morning

The amount of time it takes for a flooded car to dry depends on the location. For most places it takes about 20mins - louisiana and mississippi was about 2 months if i remember correctly. And then you have to drain the fish outta em... :O

Geez, am I the only one in my 30's here? ~rich

i dont speed to be honest. the main roads of or city/town ish area are about 40, and depending on how sharp the turn is ill only be going roughly 25 or 30. im still new to driving a RWD car/drifting so i try nto to push to hard to avoid any serious problems. really, i prefer to go to parking lots. parking lots with nothing but maybe a light or 2 are your best friend. gives you soemthign to drift around, and also very little to hit to damage your car.

<-- 18 year old here. Yeah, flooding is a biatch. I remember I flooded my car really bad when
I first got it. It would not start at all, even with the fuel pump switch the previous owner installed.
When I did a full tune-up, I cranked it with the spark plug holes open to let some of the extra
fuel/oil out. Popped in some dry spark plugs and fired right up.

It happened again a few months later but instead of using new spark plugs, I just took a lighter
to them to burn off whatever I could.

Crazy kids. I am 22 and I do stupid stuff, but do it smart as to not get busted. And my car is way too loud to do any drifting at 2 AM. Doesnt stop me tho, and I havent been caught doing it yet.

I installed a fuel pump cut off switch. Basically it goes to the wire (off your steering column) that tells your fuel pump to star pumping when your trying to start your car. When you flood it, you just turn the switch off and the fuel supply stops and your engine will unflood.

A flooded engine will not necessarily "unflood" itself even if you leave it for days or weeks. The reason a flooded engine won't start is because the excess fuel has washed away the thin oil film that seals the chambers so compression can form. Even once the fuel has evaporated the oil is still missing so compression is still too low for the engine to start. That's why you need to squirt a small mount of oil into each chamber to restart it.

I am 20. I have been dealing with rotaries since I was 16... I love them... And it makes it better because even though I am still in college, I got a new job that puts me in a "responsible" tax bracket so now I can afford the car. I am thinking about buying a Dodge Ram, cause i needs a truck to haul around all of my car parts. And when I get another source of transportation I can install of the goodies that I have been collecting. Like my S5 13bt....... cant wait.

When my car floods, I pull the fuse and crank it for a few seconds. Then put it back in and it fires right up.

Does no one use the built in anti-flood start?

WOT -> crank it over
This attempts to start the car with no fuel.

This has saved me a few times and as long as it's not too flooded this should work, however if it's really flooded then you'll have to either wait for it to dry and clean the spark plugs or push start it.
