A strap wrench like this might help. It, or an equal, are available at flea markets, job lots, walmarts, kmarts, supermarket checkout lines, and other high end stores

There is no pressure in the oil filter to release. The oil seal/gasket/o-ring has expanded from sucking up oil causing a seriously snug fit. It also doesn't help when a gorilla tightens the hell out of the new filter. A wrench/tool is never needed when installing/tightening an oil filter.

I avoid punching holes into the filter. Backwash will allow all the filtered crap to travel down into the engine/pan. I prefer to keep all the crap in the filter and don't mine the ExxonValdez oil spill on the engine. A few properly placed rags will catch spillage.

so I'm suggesting to just tug at it until it gives, it will.
The last filter crushed when I tried that (it was being a *****)... now that was a pita to get off.
