I've tweaked the HELL out of my O2 sensor on my haltech... I get about 22 on the highway..... If I NEVER let it hit boost........
I still have some tuning to do right around 0 PSI where its running fat.... but, its pretty good at 10 and 15 PSI ...... But, still, even if you get it perfect, boosting will KILL your MPG...
I can run a half a tank out on the highway and think I'm gonna break 20 MPG for sure and then some idiot wants to rev on me..... and I end up getting about 15....
Long trips though... i mean like over 50 Miles each way, like when I go back to my home town.. I get about 23-24... again... if i can keep my foot out of it and I draft a few trucks

However, I have discovered that the SAFC makes a big difference when I'm driving hard. I've pulled out quite a bit up high (still slightly rich of stoich, but not as bad as it is stock), and I no longer can chew through a quarter tank in 10 minutes on a winding road.
The stock ECU has pretty much one solution to any problem: Add fuel. Engine cold? Add fuel. Engine too hot? Add fuel. Engine at WOT? Add a LOT of fuel. Engine boosting? Add even more fuel. etc. A well tuned standalone can do a lot better.

my car got about 10mpg before. when i put the SAFC on. (It Was NOT tuned at all) I Only leaned it out a tiny bit from 1000-5000 for light throttle, and I was able to get around 16mpg. Thats with a pretty bad fuel leak near the tank too. Im sure i could have gotten way more if i didnt have the leak and if I tuned it right. That was on the highway, still pretty bad.

I mean common. Its a sports car...
And lets face it... if 17 MPG is a concern because of gas cost, and not the cost of fixing a 15-20 year old car- well you are doing pretty good then.

dont give up. you just have to accept that you bought a high end sports car, designed to go fast and do it well, not for driving to chruch or the grocery store.
acceptable gas milage is not out of a reach, its just low on the priority list of people who buy these cars. 35mpg is not possible, but a proper tuning, a free breathing engine, and perhaps and SAFC or standalone will get you a little closer.

A/C affects milage? That's not anything that needs a study. Now, how it compares to windows open is worth studying.
Anyway, if you're getting somewhere in the 15-20mpg range city, and 18-24mpg range highway, the car is working fine. Getting beyond that is too expensive to just do for the sake of fuel economy. If you're going with a standalone & such for OTHER reasons, fuel economy can be a nice benefit, but it's a lot of $$$$ to save a few $ in gas.
On the other hand, if your car is getting significantly below those figures (say, 8 city, 12 highway), there's probably something that needs fixing. Or you just need to seriously slow down.

For the record, I could get 30+ MPG going 70+ on the highway. Normal around-town driving I got 20 or so.

You really think your car is a high-end sports car?
$500 gets a high end sports car. Wow.

What's the gas mileage of a Ferrari? Who cares, it's a freakin Ferrari. Obviously, an FC N/A is nothing near a Ferrari, but the same general concept, a sports car. They're meant to have fun in and disregard costs (to a point).
With how high gas prices are now?
For instance...my yukon MIGHT get 2-3mpg better if I were to replace the 4 original 02 sensors at a cost of >$100 each. However, if I invest that $400-500, how long does it take me to earn my INITIAL COST back with the POSSIBLE 2-3mpg gain, not to mention how long before I start saving money?

MR2s are a fun sports car that get great gas mileage. Also the AE86s get good milegae and are also fun to drive and still very mod-able. It is possible to have a fuel efficient sports car... Just not one powered by a rotary. Just my thoughs/opinion though.

Look, nobody gets rotary engine cars for their power or gas mileage (compared to alternatives). For the same money you can get a more powerful car or a car with alot better gas mileage. People buy rotaries because they're cool.
Basically comparable to a Mazdaspeed Miata (what I consider as the replacement for the N/A RX7-Miata that is). I don't think anyone considers a Mazdaspeed Miata as a "high end sports car".
