how do I get a car that has sat up to crank?
I just bought another 88 that has 97,000 on it but has sat for 8 months because the person who was supposed to drive it bought something else. I just bought it from his brother who hasnt driven it so It has sat in the drive all this time.
what do I do to get it cranked and how assuming that the motor will come back to life???
need to know quickly.
I have not had to do this before with a 86+ RX . I used to own early 80 RX's but they had carbs.

1)change oil, coolant
2)might want to inject some oil or ATF into the rotor housings to ensure lubrication/ compression for startup and get the apex seals "moving" again
3)injectors might be varnished up, so if it doesn't want to start keep this in mind
4)check/ change spark plugs (basically tune-up stuff)
5)check tires for flat spotting, brakes for lock-up
6)sure there's more good ideas out there...

Charge battery, try to start.. WOnt start? Do the unflood procedure followed by injecting some oil into the plug holes to bring the compression back up.
Or just tow start it...

I started mine by push-start after it was sitting in the garage for some time......
pop it into first and tell your friends to push(hopefuly with another car)
cause you`ll be smoking all that crap from the pipes that`s been sitting for while.
try to do this only if your engine rotates when you turn on the keys.
maby others have different sugestion, but this is how I started my car after it`s been sitting
brake a leg.

no luck
spent the 1st 4 hours of daylight trying the unflood procedure and it wouldnt crank.
it felt like there was compression but I might not be getting fuel or spark.
hadto give up for now till we go pick it up with my buds trailer .
then we will try to pull it when we get it to my house so as not to cause a wreck on the public streets

Mine had sat for a year and a half. I just took the intake loos, and spryed starter fluid in it. It sputtred to life, and then quit. So I knew it was a bad fuel pump, cuz I also conldnt hear it run when first turning on the key. Got a new one($160.00 at Pep Boys..ouch) and then it cranked fine after about 45 seconds of cranking. But chek the fuel very good to make sure it hasnt turned to varnish. If it has, Youy will need to clean the hole system good first. But for only eight months, you should be fine.

Me: Need an alternator for 91 Eclipse GSX
VatoZone guy checks computer, gets white box, opens it up, and asks me "Does this look like an alternator?"
Me (laughing): Looks like an alternator to me.

"spent the 1st 4 hours of daylight trying the unflood procedure and it wouldnt crank. "
If you tell me the car won't crank, that means the starter is not turning. If that is correct, the unflood procedure will do nothing for you.
Now if you mean the car won't fire that's something else.

OK, misuse of word.
the car wouldnt fire up.....
I unhooked the hoses from the fuel pump tonight and no gas came out of it when I turned on the ignition.
shouldnt gas have come out of one of the lines?
after that I sprayed starter fluid down the intake and the car started for a brief moment while it had the fluid in the throttle body.
that tells me it isnt getting fuel and needs a new pump or the line is blocked.
sound right?
It ran for about 10 seconds. repeated it about 7 times before calling it a day.
Now I need to find a pump.

you can jumper the check connector yellow connector on the passenger side of the car, turn on the key and listen for the sound of the fuel pump coming from the rear of the car.If you hear the pump then I would say it's your fuel filter, located on the drivers side lower fire wall.I had a car that sat 4 years I just soaked the engine with atf for a week,Then cranked it a few times to get most of the atf out of the engine.Warning the car will smoke like crazy when you do get it started. Also there is a drain bolt for the fuel tank.I would drain the tank and try some fresh gas, replace old rubber fuel lines and sock filter on fuel pump,if the pump still works. The engine I have sat 4 years I installed that engine in my fc and I now have over 1,000 miles on that engine!

What youve done sounds like a bad fuel pump to me.
Just have a buddy sit and turn the key on while you are listening at the fuel pump. You should hear it turn on for two seconds right after he turns the key on. You should pull up the back carpet, there is an axcess panell there for the fuell pump. If its the pump, it will take you all of 30 to 45 min to change it, if that long. I would do the filter while doing the pump, and it will come with a new pump screen(sock).
Also, after you install the new pump, you will have to do the starter fluid trick a bit to get it primed thoughroly(sp?) just spray a little at a time after it cranks to keep it running till it keeps up on its own. Just don't over do it, starter fluid burns hotter than gas and is slightly more volitile. Intake cleaner is better.
