There is a method of checking the compression w/o installing the engine and running a real compression test. I learned it from Bruce Turrentine's 13B rebuild video.
Just turn the engine. For each half turn, you should here a chug. Basically each face of the rotor will make a chug or whoosh sound. 2 rotors equal 6 chugs. If you here 6 consecutive chugs from turning it 3 whole times, the engine's compression is good.
This is what he demonstrated in the video.I am not sure how accurate this is, but I think Bruce Turrentine knows his stuff.

I wouldn't say they are all horrible engines like a lot of people say....I put a Jspec in mine a while ago, and it runs great, perfect compression, and no problems so far.

A leakdown test wont work, and a cold compression test wont work because the seals dont do **** when the engines cold.
Either have faith and install it, or tear it apart. Or get one of those little cameras on a flexable rod and look in the ports. BTW I have no idea where you get those...

Now, JSpecs have their place. Say you're nearly broke and you just blew the engine in your daily-driver TII, then you're a good candidate for a JSpec. JSpecs also make good cores for rebuilds and for N/A-TII conversions, but other than those scenarios, they're pretty worthless.
If you are planning on going with JSpec, go with www.fc3s.org, they happen to get good batches of them in...surprisingly.
