Question How to change transmission oil.

I need to know how to change the oil in the trans. I don't know the location of the fill plugs and the drain plug(s) either. I searched and no one mentioned the location of the actuall plugs. I lost my haynes manual so I can't look it up until I buy a new one. What brands of oil would you all recommend "redline" is popular but I would have to order it online and don't know who has the best prices. Thanks!

Ok, there are a few things..

#1 you will need a pump, and a very strong arm

Now to drain the tranny the plug is on the very bottom of the tranny. It is really the only thing there. It is pretty easy to find, just look

Now the fill plug is on the side, driver side if you think about it.. It has a small square whole in it.. Use a ratchet without a socket to take it out..

Now get to pumpin.. and fill it till it is level with the whole..

We don't need no stinkin' Haynes manual, lol. Both of the links below have an 88 RX-7 factory service manual online. The 88 manual will work for the 86 and 87 models 99% of the time. See chapter 7A, Manual Transmission. Ignore the Turbo II transmission references because it has 4 plugs, while the NA only has 2.

For technique, see zyounker's post above. Be sure to remove the fill plug first to make sure that you can fill it once you drain it, if you know what I mean. When filling the transmission with new oil, keep the car as level as possisble. I would also recommend changing the differential oil at the same time.

I like Red Line, but others have had good results with Neo and Royal Purple. Don't use Mobil 1. Yes, you will probably need to order online. Pricing is somewhere around $8/qt. This is expensive compared to non-synthetics, but you only need to change the transmission and differential oil every 30,000 - 60,000 miles on a street car.

You don't really need to use a pump. You can run a funnel with a hose attached from either the engine compartment, or through the opening where the shifter pokes through. I prefer the engine compartment instead of spilling redline all over my carpet. Just make sure you use a big enough hose or you'll be there all day. I use 1/2" OD clear hose. Much better than using a suction gun or siphon pump
