How can I tell if a Turbocharger is malfunctioning.........

I noticed a weird oil smell when I installed my Racing Beat Exhaust last weekend. After punchin it some, I let it sit and idle and it was smoking around the turbo and downpipe. I thought it was just the downpipe smoking from not being used in a while. After a while, it stopped. And it never smoked again. Just a while ago I was racing my friends 88 TII with rebuilt s5 block and rebuilt s5 turbo. I got killed from a 40-50 mph roll by 3-4 cars by the time i was in 4th and he would of kept going if we didnt stop. I know his is engine and turbo is rebuilt and mine is just a jspec, but what is sad is that, he was running stock 7.5psi and I was running 9psi because of the 100deg temp today. 4-5 races, my turbo started to smoke with a oil smell. I was wondering if maybe my turbo oil seals are going out. would i still be able to run 9-10 psi even with it going out? Engine is ok, it doesnt smoke or anything and has no leaks. The compression is even better than when i first got it started over half a year ago, but it has seemed like it doesnt spool as fast as it used to recently. Any help would be great.

it probly the coating onthe the down pipe thats burning and thats wut the burning smell give it aday or so it will probly stop it also might be if you put a new gasket on the dp it just has to break itself in and mend itself between the dp and turbo by getting hot and cold several times

yea its been a week already, and it hasnt smoked at all. only when it was pushed hard. i just finished examining it right now, and id made sure of no leaks. Too me, my car feels like it doesnt spool as fast as it used too when i first got it running. it usually takes 1 day or less whenever I installed a new gasket or dp. i have done it like 4 times already and it would only take a day. One thing too is, I set the mbc to 10psi and a few days later it dropped to 8, and had to screw the mbc down some more and get it back to 10psi. Happened to me twice already.

hmm, maybe a cold-side oil leak? Even if its turbine oil leak, residue would diminish spooling. I have a leak on the cold side, and it coated everything past the compressor with oil. Also I noted that the oil seems to disappear faster than it used to. These are my only clues. Right now I am stripping down my engine (no need to rebuild, I get 110s on all faces front and rear) to replace all gaskets and hoses, and to fix all vac leaks. It may be as simple as that, a small vac leak is wreaking havok. Oil burning in the DP is suspect to oil seals in the turbo though, so I'd probably start there. Good luck, and I hope someone has more info, I'm not a noob, I have had my car for 2 years, almost 3, but I have just started to dig in.

Edit: mbc, not knowledgeable there. Cant tell you why that is happening. Weird though.

ill check that stuff out tommorow. im gonna be on the dyno tommorow, so I wil lknow if something is wrong. If I get 180whp, then something is wrong. my motor isnt rebuilt but it did get 102psi on both rotors.

oh yea, i never bother to ask before, but is that oil smell normal whenever I boost? I get a oil smell in the car as soon as I let off on the boost. And should I really be getting smoked that bad by my buddy's 88 TII with stockport s5 block and s5 turbo both rebuilt and boosting 8psi? I was getting 9 psi when we raced. He had a passenger, so it wasn't a weight issue. we went from a 40-50 roll and hung together through second, and then he pulled on me in 3rd and getting 3-4 cars before letting off after shifting to 4th. I get 102psi on both rotors with even bounces on all faces, so I'm thinking my motor can't be that bad.

If the turbo smokes when you are under boost, it's probably on it's way out.

You can pull the downpipe and TID and check for evidence of excessive oil

Otherwise, check the purge system to make sure you are not over pressurizing the crankcase.
