Hose busted, coolant leak. +Pics (56k? no way)
Hey guys, I need help on fixing this hose. I was driving it and heard a dripping sound right before the temp started to rise, luckily I was close to home and could pull it into my driveway before the car overheated.
Below are some pictures of the hose that needs to be replaced (highlighted in red, each picture of the same hose, just a different angle). The hose has a hole in it near the end that hooks the to engine itself, the other end goes to the back of the engine bay. I have a Haynes guide and have done similar projects before but I just wanted to get some input from you guys. What exactly is the purpose of this hose and is there anything I need to know/do before going about repairing it? Any questions, just ask..

yeah its the lower heater hose, I'm not sure what it does but you need it....all you gotta do is drain the coolant from the radiator and the engine block then replace it, also check your waterpump for any leaks...GL

This is pretty common. It usually burst right at the end where it enters the engine. If this is the case and I think it is by your pictures, What works well temporarily or permanently is to use scissors and cut the end off right after the split and re-attach. problem solved.

Thanks for all your help, it makes a lot of sense. I'm going to run by advance auto parts tomorrow and pick up a hose. I'll post back if it was successful, if not i'll post back complaining, lol.

I've had that hose blow up on me twice.... in the exactly the same spot on the highway on my way back to college... and I fixed it in the same parking lot both times. You can cut the hose shorter and reattach it for a temp fix... mine actually held up that way for months. It probably would still be going strong if my a/c belt hadn't shredded and cut the hose in half.... even when that happened I just cut it at the second slice and reattached it... but I replaced the hose (and clamps) ASAP after that.

dont just cut the hose and put it back on. do you want the problem to occur again say......6 months down the road?
take the ENTIRE hose off, go to your local NAPA store and ask for the same size and length along with 2 new clamps. all the oil spilled on it over the years changing your oil filter is causing it to be weak.

Well, I put a new hose on there. Filled it up with coolant, everything seems to be running fine, it's not getting too hot. BUT! the "Add Coolant" light and the buzzer still comes on.. any ideas?

i would keep checking your coolant because u can have some air in it that will go away slowly so your coolant level might be lower now then when u filled it up.

on my old Chevy i had a heater hose blow on me pretty embarrassing cause i was pulling into school parking lot and it looked like a steam engine blew under my hood, anyway i disconnected my return line from the firewall and hooked it up to the supply line port on the block, works perfect except that you have absolutely NO heat... dunno if the lines will reach on an RX7 but it may be worth a shot to someone in an emergency

That is a molded heater hose and where they go most of the time is below the oil filter. Oil and rubber don't get along very well.
You can get most part stores to let you go through their hose collection, find one that will make the 90' turn off the firewall, not rub anywhere even if you need to trim some off the ends. then connect with brass barbed connectors to just stock straight heater hose (hose by the foot) and back to the connector on the block.
Do your own oil changes and protect that hose with PLENTY of rags below the oil filter pedestal. It won't be pretty but works just the same.
If you are ordering hoses stay the heck out of Twilight Zone and order the correct hose through Mazdatrix. In fact you may want to replace ALL coolant hoses and flush the system while your at it.
