It is an automatic! On the shifter where you put it into gear there is a hold button just press it. If when you press it it doesnt go out on the dash then it might be malfunctioning!

In general, in case you don't know, the "hold" feature of an automatic is there to "lock" the transmission in gear... But from what I recall (it's been a few years since I drove a car with an auto and hold), it will only lock it in the gear next to the highest.. if you have a 4 speed gearbox, it will cause it to not go into 4th, keeping you in third. .

But that isn't the answer to the question

As described, if you press the HOLD button the Hold light lights in a constant way and the grear will lock in place.

BUT, the real issue is that you say the HOLD light is FLASHING. That is a warning that there is an electrical malfunction talking to your transmission. Could be something as simple as your speedometer isn't operating (the auto tranny looks for a signal from the speed sensor in the speedo), or a bad sensor on the tranny itself.

Is the tranny operating properly??

Yea the hold is flashing and the transmission isn't working properly. How do you retreive codes from the transmission?

According to the FSM it's flashing an error code at you. Page 11 of the S5 auto tranny section has the sequences.
