Well to me thats a typical outcome. Vr6's are, wow shall i say.....A V6! lightweight sports car with a ton of torque. So if you had like a shitload of mods, exhaust, turbo, etc. i could see if your concern was significant.

However basically, you are running a stock 19 yr old car against a slightly more advanced sports car that is just plain faster. Its okay man. If you are looking for potential HP gains your biggest comes from Exhaust. Downpipe and catback are extremely well means of getting some good gains from your T2.

In fact with the right application, i have witnessed many t2 owners to get as much as 30-40 hp to the wheels from just a good aftermarket exhaust and FCD. Not to mention the freer-flowing exhaust will bring your stock boost up several psi!

Dont freak out bro. You just need to address the issues that your car lacks. With the affermentioned mods to your car, none of wich bring any real HP gains, i would seriously consider just starting with the basics.

Good luck and let us know what the next outcome is after you dust this VW!
