HKS vs. Racing Beat Catback
Did a search but couldn't find anything comparing these two exhaust systems. My personal interest is as it applies to N/A's.
These are the only two Mazdatrix sells, and I have a high opinion of their view of the RX7 world. Sooooooo, thought I'd see which the RX7 community prefers, and why.
If you have actual experience, please comment why you chose what you did. I'm especially interested in any Dyno Test comparisons that may have been done.
I threw a vote for Racing Beat so I can follow the poll, but also because I thing the Stainless Steel can's and larger tips look
Thanks.

Yo,
I have the HKS 50mm catback on my GTUs.
I liked it because it looks almost stock with the non-slashed tips. I like the flat look of the tailpipes.
It has a great sound, aggressive but not super loud. The only problem is, the system is almost impossible to find now...which is okay with me...making it that much cooler on my car. *grin*

ive got the RB turbo back from back in the day too! Im in love w/ it. I think its more of a mid tone (vs grapefruit throwers on one end and flowmasters on a v8 on the other) I cant recomend a better sys. (except the lightup tips NOT)

I vote for the HKS.
I bought the complete package from Mazdatrix (header, presilencer, exhaust) and I had the choice to get either Racing Beat exhaust or HKS exhaust. At the time I was looking for something that looked stock but at the same time gave me some power. I asked Mazdatrix which system was quieter/looked stock and they recommended the HKS. Racing Beat's catback is nice and shiny with bigger tips. HKS is gray and has stock looking tips.
The HKS sounds very nice. It sounds deep just cruising around. In WOT it doesnt sound like a crazy weed wacker. I've gotten many compliments on the way it sounds and if youre bored you can drive around turning peoples alarms on

I have the HKS on mine and I love it. I also have a header and hi flo cat. Just crusing around the sound is very mellow and deep. The baby screams at hi rpms too. Ive gotten many compliments on the way my car sounds from many people.

Both cat-backs are quality pieces, with great fit and finish.
However, I believe the HKS 50mm is a bit restrictive for an NA, especially an '89-91 NA. A buddy of mine had the HKS for a long time, then upgraded to an Apexi N1, with that being the only mod. Seat of the pants, he gained power throughout the powerband, especially on the top end.
The N1 really makes a good NA exhaust - it sounds fantastic on an NA as well.

Well I got it cause the forum wouldn't stop praising about it.
If I had to buy it now I dunno though, $650 is expensive for 5-7hp. However it's not very loud so that's a plus here.

I have the Racing Beat Cat Back. The quality and sound are very good. I like the stainless muffler cans. The primary deciding factor was RB's reputation for delivering true performance oriented products specificially for the rx7.

I was looking for quiet. The following statement from Mazdatrix sold me on the RB
HKS and RB are both quieter than the stock mufflers when used with header and pre-silencer. The HKS is a little louder and deeper, it allows some sound through the sides of the mufflers. The RB is most quiet, with all the sound coming out the tailpipe. The RB is also beautifully constructed from

I have the HKS, I choose this because the mufflers are (or look) more straight thru than the old RB set up. However "dcfc3s" comments are right on the spot about them being too restrictive.
I'll probably go with the RB catbak for T2's next time. I drool on the N1's, but I fear the sound levels. I would also stay away of the Corcksport one, 3" mufflers is somewhat too big\loud for NA's IMHO.

Where does the Borla system fit in? I have it in my '90 and think it makes the top end quicker at the expense of low end grunt. Sucks for autocrossing but is a blast on the road.
What have others experienced?

i put in my vote for rb,as well.i curently have the old turbo rb mufflers on my n/a with offroad header/twin presilencers.its pretty damm loud, but when i spoke to mazdatrix guys about it,they informed me that the new rb mufflers are much quieter, even more so then the hks ones.idealy,i would like to get my hands on a set of the new rb n/a mufflers, but i guess spending another 450bucks is not a priority right now,to get the noise level down.[i just take it real easy drivi'n around town...]
