Hit 1000 miles on my rebuild last night!!!

Well I hit 1000 miles last night and the car feels strong. I had enough self control to keep the rpm under 4000-4500 the entire 1000miles. Last night I decided that at 1000mi I was going to go to 6000rpm until 1500miles where I will be able to take it to red line. It had ok power under 4000rpm... it wasnt slower than my brother's sentra... it could get out of its own way... but it was like a whole different car above 4000rpm... It has to be broken in by next week so I'm going to be doing alot of driving this week... It should be fun I will pull compression numbers later.

Two problems I have... when accelerating hard the tach will sometimes stop responding and hold at a certain rpm while the engine keeps on revving... at the same time both the turn signal lights on the dash will start to light up, dim at first and continually getting brighter (its a constant light they dont flash). the voltage gauge doesnt move up or down and none of the other gauges are affected. The check engine light sometimes flashes on when accelerating in 2nd gear too. What should I be looking for? bad gound? faulty trailing coil? a short in the dash wiring?

The other problem that I have is the car stinks inside... previous owner was a smoker and it smells of urine a bit(Dont ask... I'm not sure how or why but I can tell you the blame rests with the previous owner or the many mice that left me some pretty big mouse nests under the rear bins) So any tips on how to deodorize the car? I have taken out the rear bins, the carpet in the back, and all the sound deadening material in the rear hatch and cleaned it... but the car still smells. I am indesperate need of some tips to neutralize odors short of pulling the rest of the interior out (Which is my next plan if no one can help me)..

Thanks,
Rob

You're gonna have to attach the interior with a serious detail. Get the following:

-Decent shopvac
-Oxy-Clean
-All purpose cleaner (simple green works APC for odor removal)
-A stiff brush w/ handle
-Large bucket
-Some terry cloth/cheap microfiber towels

First step, take the vacuum to the car and do the best job you can. Next, pre-treat the carpets/cloth seats with straight APC (all purpose cleaner, simple green for odor removal). While the APC dwells, mix up the following solution:

-1 scoop Oxy-Clean
-4oz APC
-2 gallons hot water

Attack the carpeting, seats and headliner with this solution and your stiff handled brush. The APC really works to de-odorize and degrease fibers while the Oxy clean is great at removing stains and restoring color. Vacuum out all areas again and leave your doors/windows open for a couple of hours on a hot day to dry.

For interior vinyl/plastics, mix up some APC in a spray bottle diluted 10:1 This should be enough to clean and de-odorize without hitting the surfaces with really strong chemicals. Use your MF towels or terry towels for this...

Be sure to get into the door vents to remove odors as well - you don't want to be blowing that old smell in your fresh interior. Spray some diluted APC into the vents...just a mist of it. If that doesn't kill the odor from the vents, try a couple of mists of cologne.

Febreeze (sp?) will just temporarily mask the smell..it does not remove it.

The only other thing that I would do before I did what jon88se mentioned...is take out all the carpet/sound dampening and clean the actual metal of the car. All you would need is a nice thick cloth and the APC he was talking about. The only reason Im suggesting this....is because you said it smells like urine...and youve had rats in there...so there is no telling where the smell is coming from...might as well clean it all at once. If you just clean the carpet/seats/headliner....you may not get all the smell out.

yeah the smell is definately on the metal/ in the rubber that is stuck to the metal. I will try that ... Ive tried some of the stuff that is susposed to neutralize odors but it doesnt work that great... i guess I should just gut the interior for the moment and start scrubbing. Thanks for the tips!

Thanks alot everybody!!!! It worked out... It turned out that the only area the really smelled was the rear bin area... alittle bit of simple green, oxy clean, water, and a toilet brush(only stiff brush I could find... how fitting to remove urine right?)... I also used some sort of carpet cleaner/deodorizer from turtle wax to do the front carpets since i didnt feel like ripping them out since they werent the source of the smell... My FC is getting closer to a car that girls will ride in now

Any ideas on my electrical issue guys?

Thanks a million,
Rob

Must be nice- I got a rebuild, streetport, and exhaust all at the same time, got around 950 miles on it without boosting or going over 4000. Now its been in the body shop getting repainted for the past month when they said it would only be a week or two. I am so looking forward to getting it a little over 4000 and getting into some boost! The problem now is that the guys at the body shop are probalbly out hotrodding it at 8000 rpm and 10 or 12 psi.

I changed the oil and filter at 500mi and I was going to change the oil and filter at 1500mi... Should I change it now too? The oil isn't diluted with gas yet...
