high flow CAT pass smog?

its smog time again here in CA and my catalytic converters are gutted. i'm planning on purchasing this high-flow catalytic converter from e-bay and i just want to know from another rotary enthusiast if it will help me pass smog. do you also need the secondary cat to help pass, or just the main cat? any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You really would need to find out from the cat manufacturer if it is 50-state smog legal. A new cat is general will dramatically clean up you exhaust HC if you old cat is shot.

i wouldnt go with an EBAY cat, the lining that suspends the catalyst in the housing will burnup in no time do to the intense heat that our exhaust tempuratures exit at, spend the extra money and go for a bonez high flow cat, -alex

Yes ... you must buy a cat made for a rotary engine that can withstand the heat.

I passed with flying colors after going from dual cats to a single performance cat... and my fuel economy & power went up as well.

get a Bonez Superflo system. Some what reasonable price but it sounds sooooooo nice and I passed with flying colors here in AZ where we have the Dyno sniffer.

I FAILED with a high flow bonez cat and all my emissions equipment on and working... as well as leaning my car out on my s-afc to -19 at idle =|

I'm still not sure why I couldn't pass really, but I gave up, registered my car under a po box in a county with no emissions, and ripped all of that crap out

I'm guessing it's due to your FD pump.

Just reduceing the **** out of the SAFC won't do much. Get the AFR's set and you shoudl be better off.

OR you can always use the old Rubbintg alcohol trick to pass.

My friends Camaro went through and almost blew 0 emissions doing this.

Thank you very much for the info. I will definitely look into getting a Bonez high flow.

The AFC-II settings could be the reason you're not passing. I believe if you run richer than stoich., you increase your NOx emissions. What did you fail on? Hydrocarbons? NOx?

yah i passed with the bones high flow cat too. make sure all maintanace is done, new plugs, filters, spark plug wires. make sure u warm up the cat RIGHT before the test, like drive in the freeway, or ask the person who's testing to warm it up good. also, try smogging when gas tank is almost empty, but be careful! OH! and use 87 octane!

I don't have to pass NOx in my state. Just hydrocarbons and CO%, I passed cruise hydrocarbons and CO% easily, and passed idle CO% VERY easily, but failed idle hydrocarbons. And don't say something like "lean it out more" because trust me it wont go any lower. The idle speed minimum was like 510 for the test, and my car was idling at 490 until I put in the clutch, then it went up to 515.

Oh yes and that was with the idle mixture (variable resistor) all the way lean as well, and tricking the acv to pump air into the cat at idle as well as cruise.

And before doing the test, I changed my spark plugs, cleaned my k&n filter, changed my fuel filter, and drove on the freeway for about 20+ minutes right before the test.

I passed smog on my 89 TII with a corksport 3in dp and a bonez high flow cat. This was before the dyno smog though. Passed with flying colors. I'll see if I can dig up my old smog papers and get the numbers. If everything else is working correctly you should pass with no problems.

High Octane, advance ignition, lean, no turbo

This is better done with high octane, advancing ignition, leaning, and disabling the turbo wastegate (for turbos). In Alameda County our car enters test where it begins a cooldown, then started, then drives a dyno. A stock precat is most effective in reducing poor emissions, especially when one lacks the resources to adjust other parameters. Fuel blending is another advanced option.
