High/bouncing idle, requesting help.
I have an 87 TII with an hks air filter and a racing beat exhaust. Those are the only real upgrades. Also it supposedly has 700 cc injectors(primary and secondary). It has approximately 53000 miles on the engine since it was rebuilt, and the chassis has 133000 miles on it. I am having a problem with my idle. It is revving to about 2200 rpm for 17 seconds, then going down to 1400 and bouncing rhythmically between 1400 and 1600. I understand it should idle higher do to the accelerated warm up system when cold but it never did until now, before it would just start at about 1300ish rpm and as it warmed up go down to 800-900 with a slightly surging idle. Now its holding at a higher rpm for 17 seconds whether it is warm or cold, and won't go under 1500 rpm.
I started having idle problem last week. The idle would actually get low, then bounce back up, and stalled once. I inspected the intake system and found the filter to be less than extraordinary, so I replaced the filter and cleaned the MAF sensor and the hoses up to the intercooler, and also cleaned the throttle body. My idle was a bit higher now and did not drop down to the point of stalling.
The the other day it bounced around like it is now but still went down to a regular idle after a few seconds. We looked around to see if anything looked out of place and checked again for vacuum leaks, and when I started it again it stayed in that 1400-1600 range and will not go down whether fully warmed up or not.
I am not sure where to start looking first. I am guessing that it has to do with the AWS, or parts of the idle control system. For reference it sounds very similar to this https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...ging+high+idle . Also I just drove somewhere a little while ago, and it didnt bounce it just stayed steady at 1500 rpm, but then started bouncing again. Any help would be greatly appreciated, especially if you have had a similar problem.

I had this problem, was a mixture of vacuum leaks and the TPS sensor adjustment. Check for any that you have. you can use some carburetor cleaner and spray it a little bit in small areas one at a time.. the idle should drop if you find one. If you still have the IAC on the manifold and not blocked off, check and see if its working by unplugging it. If its working the idle should change. Unless the rpms are too high already you might not notice a difference at all. Check the throttle see if its stuck..if you have an FMIC its easy but if you dont, lube it up really good anyway. GL

Yes, much luck actually. Lets just say I was more than tired when I posted my question and didn't even notice that the page I linked had 11 pages, not 1. I still am not sure what exactly happened in the first place. I turned down the fast idle screw and adjusted the screw on top of the thermowax until I got my idle down too low, then started adjusting the bac and readjusting the tps. I eventually got the idle right then readjusted the screws I had messed with close to factory specs and adjusted the tps and fast idle screw more thoroughly. I have it revving up to about 1800 rpm when cold then slowly going down to a non surging idle of about 850 rpm. I still have a little more fine tuning to do, but it is about 100 times better than it was, thanks for you input.

What kind of setup are you using for your fmic bye the way. I have strongly considered doing this in the next few months (replacing the intercooler with pvc temporarily ever time I make an adjustment to my idle or tps is just not going to cut it lol).
