Hey, Im new!!!!!

Just signed up in here.

Names Rob and Im from Sydney Australia.

Got told about this forum from a mate.
I own a 89 ser 5 rx7 turbo.
Im running a 13b mild port, 3mm seals and full dowlling.
The standard turbo is highflowed and I have a micro-tech ECU. Im pumpin 22psi into it atm.

I'll stop my dribbling now and sit back and have a read.

Cheers,
Rob.

I think you'll find this forum to be VERY useful for anything reguarding your car - especially when something breaks.

Thanks for the big welcome guys!!!!!

Were do I start???.... I have owned the car for about 19 months now, its my first rotor!!! I love it!!!

Here is a quick run down, Im on my 2nd motor, 2nd gearbox, 2nd diff, 3rd clutch, had 2 turbo re-builds, 3rd front diff rubber(solid now), 5th set of tyres on the back and 2nd on the front. Yes, a lot of this has been trial and error. (and lots of heart ache)

Im running full after market ECU, I have ser 6 fuel pumps, stock injectors.

I have a turbosmart bleed valve fitted and it is set for 19psi, with the highflow and the mild porting the car snaps up on boost that quick that it over boosts to 22psi!!! As soon as I get the oil metering pump problem fixed I'll get a pic of it for you hitting 22psi.

I have a autometer 20psi boost gauge, so it looks funny when it goes past 20psi and off the dial..

The mirrors arnt coulor coded here in Aust, tho a lot of people paint them. I like leaving the car looking all stock on the outside and all the goodies underneath.

As soon as I get back to work tomorrow I will get the camera and take sum more pics of it for you all to see...

Thanks once again....

22 PSI on the stock turbo and intercooler is NOT good. The stock system is only good for about 10 PSI, MAYBE 14PSI with a front mount.

Hey Im not going to start a fight here or anything. But A ser 5 turbo will suport more than 10psi!!!!
My friends ser3 is making 240rwhp on 16 psi with a highflowed turbo and a front mount.

Once i get a new front mount cooler I will put the boost down and be a little bit conservative with it..

22psi on stock injectors? That sounds rather strange to me, as my car starts to lean out around 10psi. Also, how has your stock intercooler held up?

Shouldn't he be getting more than 240hp?

Remember with the FC the injectors are capable of ~300hp. It’s the ECU that causes the lean mixtures, and with the Microtech that shouldn’t be a problem. 22psi on the stock turbo would be the reason for two rebuilds in 19 months!
QIK87U, you might as well turn that turbo down to something sensible because the stock compressor is not adding much extra power past about 12psi, but it will be adding a serious amount of heat. Combined with the stock IC, your intake temps would make avoiding detonation very difficult. I bet that’s why the first motor popped.
Grab a front-mount IC, and upgraded compressor, a pair of 12AT 800cc/min injectors for the secondaries and some dyno time, throw in the pot and stir well!

NZConvertible, My first motor went POP cause I had a leanout . The bleed valve was set for 12psi. On a very cold night it went out to 14psi under load in 3rd..

Then it went POP... I had a HUGE front mount cooler then.

With the 22 psi over boost I am getting now the ECU has been tuned to hit 100% duty on the injectors as so I dont do another engine. Running the top cooler I can get upto 5 hits before the cooler is that hot you could cook an egg on it. My turbo isnt running the standerd compressor wheel in it. I have had it HIGH FLOWED, a new bigger wheel has been put in...the ser 5 housing has been machined out to take it.

At 5500 rpm my turbo runs out of huff, I will be getting another fmic as soon as I get the money. As it is I have a new TO4 60-1 turbo sitting in my room waiting to go on the car...My aim is 350 rwhp once it is finished.

No offence intended here, but that's a terrible way to tune. Injector duty cycle should be kept below 80%, 85% at most, otherwise accuracy goes to ****. Instead of drowning the engine in fuel (overly rich mixtures really kill power), why don't you just turn down the boost? You'll have the same amount of power running proper mixtures without the high intake temps and crazy fuel consumption.

Any compressor wheel small enough to be squeezed into the stock compressor housing is going to be well past its efficiency peak at 22psi. All you're doing is adding heat, not power. Also the shaft speeds required to achieve that much boost are severely limiting the life of the bearings. 22psi may impress your mates, but with your current set-up it's not the way to make reliable power.
Sorry to knock you, you've got a really sweet looking car there. I just think you're going the wrong way about getting your power.

I can understand what you are saying and I agree with some of what you are saying. The place that I got the car tuned at set it to run megga rich top end as so I dont blow another motor. I am getting max power out of my engine now with the bleed valve set at 19psi. With the top cooler it wont make anymore power if it is wound down. Once I get a front mount cooler again the boost will be comming down and we will be tuning the car to get max power from the way it is set up.

Since the new motor and turbo has gone into the car it hasent copped stuff all of a flogging. It has done about 1500 miles in the last 8 months.. ( I lost my licence for doing bad things)

I ran it up on a dyno about a month ago and it made 208rwhp, 2hp down from when it was tuned 7 1/2 months ago... It was also a hotter day when I had the power run done.

I hear 20B engines cost $5 in australia

I LOVE reading car mags from australia. It's like EVERYONE has a 350hp hot rod in their garage.
