With my new information, what do you all think I should do?

I am thinking Jerry's to install, and Import to rebuild.

Arrg, that is a TERRIBLE idea! That's why I'm rebuilding the engine in my TII right now instead of driving it!! Not saying that you personally are an ***, but that's an ******* move.

Anyhow...I'd think it's best to have atkins rebuild (maybe rotary ressurection if you want to ship it to him, doesn't cost much) , and then have a reputable shop install if you don't want to install yourself.

^^ What you would spend in shipping would outweigh the cost of the build for atkins... Think warranty...... If something DOES go wrong... *YOU* will have to spend the money to ship it back and forth. Is it worth it?

The guy who uses all atkins parts for HALF the price said out of ~100 engines, he has see back only ~3.

I am thinking of just getting that guy to do all the work, but I am unsure. It is VERY hard to take the engine out and put it back in, am I right?

And also true. So I guess horsepower is better? Both can kill ya.

If it were me I'd let Atkins take care of everything, install and rebuild. That way you know it's done right. But if you want the car back sooner, try pulling/installing yourself. I haven't pulled a rotary engine yet, but if you read the fsm and are somewhat mechanically inclined/have time/patience I don't see why you can't do it yourself.

1. I won't hesitate to call him an ******* for a) giving him the idea and b) for even thinking about it. You just shouldn't do that PERIOD.

2. I'd still go with Atkins Rotary because they are KNOWN for their ROTARY work as opposed to the smaller shops. Get your motor rebuilt and then do the install yourself.

As far as the difference: There are 2 series of FCs
Series 4 = 1986 to 1988 NON turbo and 1987-1988 turbo
Series 5= 1989-1992 Non turbo and 89-91 turbo

If you have a Series 4 (S4) NA then it's easier to go with an S4 motor (whether it's NA or TII) so it's simple, plug and play. Pull all wires/hoses/harnesses and then install new motor, plug in the wires/harnesses/hoses and turn it on. Same applies to the S5.

If you put an S5 motor into an S4 you'll have to do a lot of wiring to make sure SOME things work right. Included, but not limited to the OMP, ECU, Body harness etc., etc.

If you can follow simple instructions then you can follow the FSM. Make sure you have the right tools and you take your time.

Ok... so drop the 2g at Atkins and then do the install myself. How long should I be expected to take with the install? Also, I have to take it out too and bring it to Atkins, don't I?

Atkins does NOT install at all. So I will have to take it out...

Yarp... But its really not THAT hard. Neither is rebuilding... you should just tackle it yourself! be a man! hehe

I found that it was cheaper for me to buy the tools, parts, etc and do it myself.. then to pay for a rebuild. And in the end.. you have new tools!

That's great. If you have the time. Actually...it might be faster to do it yourself unless atkins had an immediate opening to rebuild your engine.

So my dad got me ATLEAST employee discount on parts and labor, but I am unsure if they do rotaries. We will see tomorrow around 9AM PST.

My step dad is the manager at a dealership, so I will probably get more then employee discount, but at the very least if they will do my rotary, then that is another option.

I think rebuilding requires the proper tools and patience. I think Felixwankle (remember the skittle???) was one of the few YOUNG people to have rebuilt motors (somewhat succesfully) but I don't think it should be tackled by a beginner just yet. You have to have the correct clearances, if not then make it BE the right clearance and blah blah blah.

As far as install and uninstall:

it should take you no more than 10 days in and out. I don't know how long your rebuild will take but the install/uninstall shouldn't take longer than a week and a half (working semi-hard but slowly to ensure everything is on right). Take your time and you should be ok.

You should un/reinstall. I have begun my TII project without any prior experience. What this gives you is knowledge on what you drive. You could then feel more comfortable fixing the car if you had to do anything else. Plus YOU get to keep tools that you may buy.

I spent plenty of time reading the FSM and this website before I turned one bolt.I started to learn about mods I could do on the cheap while I was there. I plan on painting my UIM,replacing hoses, and stuff like that.

IF you pull the engine you might want to take the tranny with it to and replace the clutch. Also you could grease the trans while your motors away.

Your step dad probably know plenty of stuff to help you out. So go ahead and do it.

I dont live with my step dad, but I can have him and his buddy help me with it indeed.

He is the manager however, he doesn't work on the cars for a living. He has however restored 2 Cuda's that I know about, so he has dug into engines.

Also, my clutch has already been changed, about 1,000 miles ago.

unless the clutch is SUPER old or failing you should leave it alone. It's easy to drop the tranny later.

Just do it, don't be scared because there is nothing to fear. It builds character and a newfound respect for the car when YOU build it.

I am taking out my engine. I have all the tools for it and I have the help and support I need.

I am going to study my haynes manual and get familiar with my project... Wish me luck and any pointers would be very helpful.

After 6 in-outs, I find it's easier to take the tranny with the engine. You'll have to drain the fluids first. Don't forget to take the shifter off before you start yanking on it wondering why it won't come out.

Also, don't do it under an open garage door. :P Last time I had to disassemble part of the garage door for clearance to get another inch so the engine would clear the front clip, this makes for an unpleasant day and an unhappy wife.
