Generally with the JDM crate motors its a mixed bag. No real way to get compression numbers and you don't know how long it has been in storage. Plus I don't know about your area, but I believe the JDM motors do not have the smog equipment so that may or may bot be another issue. My suggestion would be to try to find a turbo motor that has been in a running car or at least one that has been already rebuilt. You could get a motor that runs perfect, or one thats ready to blow and would need a rebuild anyway.
If you are tight on money you might just want to look at getting another N/A motor thats running or rebuild what you got and save up for a TII motor.

I remember when my 87 started grinding in third it was a couple months before the clutch went out... I thought it was "sticky" then too having to press and hold the clutch before shifting.
But definatly bleed it first to see if that fixes it. with out a 32mm(?) socket and an impact gun you'll never get the fly wheel off.

I used a breaker bar myself. Drop the oil pan, the oil pickup and the restrictor so that the engine can sit flat on the ground, then put the passenger side motor mount back on. Using your engine hoist, lower the engine until it sits on the ground, lift the leg of the hoist and put it over that passenger side mount. Jack up the hoist just enough to take the slack off, put your breaker bar and socket on the other side of the engine, and jump on it as hard as you can. Poor man's impact wrench.

Hello!
I am almost 18 years old and have been driving my 7 since I was 16. I know very little to nothing about my Rx-7 but visit here and read my large book when I run into problems.
I figured I would register and introduce myself...
I am James, and I have a 1986 Rx-7 non Turbo, custom champaign-ish color(Maeco messed up my original paint job) and maroon interior. I jump between loving my car and hating it. I want so bad to fix my car because I LOVE MY 7 underneath it all but I, at times, feel like I will be wasting money I have if I pursue fixing it, and adding on small things here and there.
I actually have at least a couple questions.
#1 - I hear that Rx-7's are supposed to be these bad *** fast cars, but mine just doesn't seem to push out the power that I hear it should have...
#2 - I love drifting. I am semi-o.k. when it comes to it, but I would love to get better, so if you could give me any pointers and or proper ways to actually drift, I would love that. (Currently, I drift at around 20-35mph and go in this order; E-Brake, Push in clutch and then release, and hit my gas)
#3 - I have read up on the over heating issues, and I still do not understand. My father has purchased and installed a new thermostat and new tubing, still it over heats. My overflow tube and little metal piece for lack of better words are busted however, if that has any effect.
#4 - I smoke. A LOT! If I rev to around 4.5+ I start to get my James Bond smoke screen going on, is this normal?
#5 - I love to go fast, and I love feeling the torque. My car does not seem to accelerate as fast as other cars, is this a driver error? I usually shift at around 4-4.5rpm... Also, my 3rd gear is sticky and will grind if I rev too high or do not hold in my clutch for 1-2 seconds prior to shifting.
Anyways, thanks in advance for all replies I may get.
Glad to be apart of the community, if you'll have me.![Smilie](https://www.rx7club.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)

1) Steering angle: a stock FC comes with only about 30-35 deg of steering. Compared with 35-40 on a stock 240sx... making the Nissan easier to slide.
If you are down with spending two Bens I recommend getting a Steering Angle Kit from Mazdatrix. It's worth it for sliding.
2) That rear DTSS deal. Those bushings can throw off anyone wanting to drift who started out on an FC.
3) Stock LSD - even the ones equipped with one... well they're getting old and won't allow you to slide properly.
> As for me I find that the clutch kick/throttle combo is easy to initiate a slide with, provided you have pretty good steering work to coordinate it after. A feint/manji is also not bad since the FC's movement back/forth is pretty consistent.

i know you don't want to hear this...
but your best bet is to find another nonturbo for like $2500 with a rebuilt motor and then keep your current one as a parts car. nonturbos don't hold their value at all so you can pick up someone else's moneypit and save yourself the trouble.

well you can buy a NEW "used" car but you'll eventually be on the same boat ( it might be old and might have a bad headgasket or some other crap like that) but if you rebuild NOW you'll know your motor will be in good shape for years to come.
I would recommend staying NA but that's your choice and knowing the need for speed some teens have I don't think you'll take my advice.
Stay NA and rebuild.

Oh, and you really do have a lot of options, like the ones people are mentioning. I really wouldn't know which to pick myself.

My engine was rebuilt about 30,000-40,000 miles ago, but after the rebuild, it sat for 5 years in my grandmas drive way. She was going to sell it, but I told her I wanted it.

I forgot to mention Atkins is local... There is a guy, Curtis James, located in Texas that could do me for 1,100 to 1,200 he says if I send him the block.

My first instinct though would be to sell the car while its running. Be "one of those guys" that lies about everything.. get what you paid for it... then turn around and buy another one.... However, getting a rebuild is probably the best option. I've had an atkins rebuild.. I loved it. Never had a problem.
The best part about you living where you do.... is that if something DOES go wrong... you don't have to pay the shipping to get it fixed.

Used to be $2500 less than 2 years ago, now it's $4500. See, those nonturbos that don't hold their value have suddenly jumped up in value by $2000. Might still be a good option though.
Oh, and you really do have a lot of options, like the ones people are mentioning. I really wouldn't know which to pick myself.

I think these cars are going to become rare as time goes on.
To the OP. Save your money and find a clean 7. I've been there before and had an 86 that gave me nothing but headaches. I then bought an 87 and again headaches( all though not as many) I found and 88 gxl with 80k and all records. Paid $4000 for it. It has been very reliable and I've been able to spend money on other things then just keeping it running.
People who buy these cars usally don't know how to take care of them. You should see the look on peoples faces when I sell an rx8 and tell them they should check the oil on every fill up.

If you start dumping money in this car just don't expect to get it all back. Then you'll be OK

2. if your car is a gxl then you have a lsd ^^ get suspension then get a cone and do some real dough nuts a actual ring, Do it clock wise then counter and if you feel daring try the figure 8.
3. you have a blown coolant seal= hate to say it but rebuild
4. reason of over heating, and no its not normal. get quotes for a rebuild.
5. rebuild trans, also for faster shifting its nice to have a lighter flywheel and racing clutch. Also a good tune up is always a plus. PLUGS!!!! haha wires get those horse that you loss ^^
and last but not least Welcome to the club!!!

Curtis is a good guy. He's revvinsevens.com, I've bought some parts from him. I haven't had any work done by him, but he basically makes his business bringing in, rebuilding and parting 2nd gens, from what I can tell.
