Help with Turbo Upgrade Process
Hello everybody!
I own a non-turbo 1987 RX-7 and I am in the process of upgrading a turbo on to the engine. I already have the manifold connected to the car. The turbo and the external wastegate are already connected to the turbo manifold.
I had a couple of questions on the rest of the steps in order to make this project safe and succesful.
Will I have to exchange the ECU with a Turbo 2 ECU?
Will I have to exchange the fuel injectors with 480 + CC fuel injectors?
What else do I need to do for this process to work?
If anybody can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it.

im also boosting my 87 n/a with all stock t2 parts our aleast most . as far as the ecu goes you can run the s4 t2 ecu , imo its the easiest way, but can be done with the stock n/a ecu and a afc also just got to do a lil more tuning . you could go standalone but that can get up there in price . as far as the injectors go you have to up grade to atleast the stock t2 550cc and from what i know thats kinda pushing it . i'm going 720cc on all 4 injectors, fuel pump is another thing . 255 walbro will do theres other things to that i'm leaving out . but a very helpful sight like this will get you caught up alil . its good to ask thats what this forum is for but if you search a lil on this sight you'll find some info. i am by farso not a guru . but alot of reading can go a lil ways i guess

well heres a small parts list of some of the stuff you will need . thats just for starters

s4 turbo lim,uim,tb
s4 turbo tb acc cable
s4 turbo maf
s4 turbo fuel rails
s4 turbo ecu
oil filter adapter for a oil feed if you dont use the t2 front cover
injectors 550cc or better
fuel like i said 255 walbro
you can use the stock n/a harness just need to switch like 3 pins or so .
intercooler , have a few choices
if you do some smart bargain shopping and the parts are acutally in good shape this can be done on a small budget

Can I use 480CC Low Impedance Turbo Fuel Injectors instead? I found them on ebay. It mentions that they will fit a crx, civic, prelude and an rx-7.
After reading the suggested website for help on installing a turbo, it is mentioned that the stock ECU from my non-turbo car could work? If this is true, this would be much better and cheaper!

turbo came with 550cc stock. 460cc on n/a , so that right there is a no go since they are 480cc. as far as the n/a ecu goes click on that link i posted he went a different way of the whole intake manifolds , he kept the n/a ones and i'm going with the t2 mani's . but he has info on all that . worth the few hours of reading i think
and as for my comment bout the budget thing .there are going to be times where you are going to have to fork over some money for some parts like a actual good turbo . i plan on going with a bnr rebuild or fork a lil more over for the bnr stage one. as far as my ecu . im going stock s4 t2 and have a rtek installed, just dont know which one yet most likely the 1.8

The tii front cover has the oil return not the feed. You will have to either make a feed from the oil pressure sender location or use the oil filter adapter.

if u try to use the n/a ecu u will have to get a afc and other things its easier to just get the used t2 ecu.
and for the coolent lines run the feed and return where the bac valve used to go and get a oil filter pedestal for the oil feed line
u will also need to adjust your timing alittle
and u need stock s4 t2 550cc low imp injectors,this not lower and not higher unless u know what u are doing.

How did you come to conclusion that you could slap a bunch of manifolds and a turbo onto your engine, and it would all miraculously work?
How much power are you shooting to make?
The 480's are fine if you just want 200hp.
What about intercooling?
Are you going to keep it under 10psi of boost?
What about the fuel pump?
How does your computer know you're making boost now?

yeah, I saw this old thread, a guy bought a supposed turbo engine but it was a 6 port fitted with a t2 intake manifold. They took the 5th and 6 ports and grinded the material to make one big port It looked horrible.
if its a 6 port block, stick with 6 port intake. I would consider getting a s5 t2 manifold and turbo over the s4 t2 anyday.

Turbo ECU/Fuel Injectors/Turbo Upgrade
-I want to thank all of you for the great help so far!
-I am planning to gain about 200 to 250hp. Nothing more than that. I will be really happy with this much horsepower as long as the engine does not blow up and everything is safe!
-I have found the best solution for the oil feed and oil return lines! Thank you!
-I have purchased the following items already:
1. Turbo
2. Turbo Manifold
3. External Wastegate
4. Intercooler + Piping
5. Blow off valve
6. Fuel Pressure Regulator
7. Oil feed line
8. Oil return line
9. Downpipe
10. Boost Controller
11. Stage 3 Clutch
12. Short shifter
-Most of the parts area already installed, except a few:
1. External Wastegate
2. Boost Controller
Do I connect these items together?
There is two places on the external waste gate where you can plug in hoses, which one is for what part?
I do know that the main outlet from the external wastegate connects to the exhaust or it can be left open.
There are two more openings...
How do I go about controlling boost?
-Now back to my biggest two problems the ECU and the fuel injectors, and what about the fuel pump?
So the best ECU solution will be to purchase a used Turbo II ECU?
It will directly fit in place of my stock non-turbo ECU?
All of the wires and parts will match up?
What is the most inexpensive place I can purchase ECU's and fuel injectors?
If I plan to run between 200-250hp, the 480cc fuel injectors will work fine?

I know for sure the t2 ecu will require afm, and 550cc injectors at leasst! Maybe someone else will post. As long as the other sensors are the same the ecu will read it all, but Im not a pro at NA stuff. I jsut have a t2 with decent car knowledge.
Try classified section, but if you want. Ive got 4 low impedance 550cc injectors, 2 purple and 2 tan. I also havea s4 t2 ecu. Ill let them for for $80 shipped.
You might also be able to go with a piggyback unit to add more fuel, and/or compensate for bigger fuel injectors. Its not good to max out your fuel injectors even if the 450cc ones can handle it, but you gotta find out their duty cycle to know if they are getting maxed out.
Megasquirt is a cheap stand alone but requires wiring, and later tuning

I am using a Super Turbo Manifold, that I purchased from ebay.
It has a connection for both the turbo and the external wastegate, with an extension. It is pretty cool!
If I go with the Turbo II ECU, what kind of an AFM will I need?
Any other upgrades?

This topic is so full of misinformation I don't know where to start.
First, what turbo are you going to run? This is a bit important and it's amazing no one else has asked...
Second, no RX-7 ever came with 480CC injectors. NAs are 460CC, TIIs are 550CC. GSL-SE is 680CC, FD is something like 550CC/850CC.
Third, no one can tell you how much injector you need without knowing about the turbo. At the MINIMUM, you will need 4 x 550CC.
Fourth, you need to upgrade the fuel pump for sure.
Fifth, you are asking such basic questions that I suggest you stop right now and seek someone with experience to help you. If you don't, you'll blow the engine.

First, there's no such thing as "turbo" fuel injectors. Injectors for forced induction are exactly the same as those for NA applications. Injectors used in turbo applications tend to be bigger.
Second, 480CC is still not big enough. 4 x 550CC is the MINIMUM you will want to run with an upgraded fuel pump.
They are universal turbo fuel injectors that can fit into an rx-7, civic, prelude, integra and others. So I suggest some of us need to do a lil of bit more reasearch before replying with dumb answers that think they know everything but just end up looking stupid!

Try dropping in these 480's into any "civic, prelude integra", and you're going to end up with a car that goes no where.
These stock engines run anything from about 190cc/min up to about 300cc/min, so you're now trying to pump almost twice the amount of fuel.
Oh, and if it isn't obvious, none of those cars come turbo'd either...

Hey guys,
After I hook up the turbo and the external wastegate to the manifold, how do I know that my boost level will be at the low or high by using a manual boost controller? Will there be any required adjusting on the bolts of the external wastegate, the ones that connect to the manifold? Or do I just control the boost with just the **** on the boost controller?
