HELP: t2,smoke, back fire, smoke in bay

I'm not the owner of the car, i'm asking on behalf of him. Well this is what he told me to write. He just baught it, after my brother looked at it, oil has not been changed for a long time, VERY thin. Coolant has not been flushed, for at least 2 years. It does not have a brownish colour that ive seen in some engines. I doubt it has ever been properly tuned up. Spark plugs have not been changed. NOTHING has been done. Except an oil change. The car has 19xxxx and compression last checked was 90-90-97 for the front

A lot of popping noise (backfire I believe).

white smoke from exaust, a lot when just started but stops when semi-warmed up.

the engine smoked on the left side of the engine (left side when standing in front of the car). the smoke was white i do not know if it is coolant or not, but the smoke came below the coolant cap, by the turbo. I apologize for my poor description. Well the smoke seemed to look like it was constantly coming out, it started after the smoke stopped from the exaust. When he saw this we immediatly shut the car off. No loss of coolant.

The battery won't hold a charge.

thats all we i remeber from what we checked so far. luckily he baught the car for cheap. It still pulls strong untill the smoke, since then we have not touched it yet.

He says thank you for all the help and hope to learn much from this site.

white smoke at the begining of a startup from the exhaust is normal, if it continues after the car has been driven, its most likely coolant.
Popping and backfiring is ALWAYS related to the TPS and the engine timing. Adjust both to spec, search the boards for more information.

The white smoke on the side 'constantly' coming out is either oil or coolant, or both. If his o-rings in the intake manifold are cracked, coolant will leak onto the exhaust manifold making lots of white smoke. If the oil injector lines are cracked, oil will seep from the intake manifold down around and onto the exhaust manifold, making smoke as well. The turbo has oil and coolant lines that could be cracked, or the gaskets could be fucked.

There are alot of things to check, but best advice is to get yourself a haynes and the factory service manuals and study them a bit. When your familiar with the engine from the books, start taking it apart to shortblock and you can check out the omp lines and all that other ****. If I had a car like that, I'd inspect and rebuild the intire intake/oil metering and coolant system with new gaskets and seals from the dealer.
There was a place that sold the intake gaskets as a set for all that ****, like a mini rebuild, I believe it was mazdatrix.

Thank you. I will take a look at the rebuild kit. Where can I get my hands on a factory service manual?

He and I already have the haynes manual and I apologize I meant constantly as in it does not go PUFF........PUFF....its a constant stream of smoke. Could a dying engine cause so much backfire when just sitting in the drive way? When we first drove the car there were some backfire but the idle has always been that high ever since he baught it. Ever since he saw the smoke he ceased driving it.

Well thats a good idea to stop driving it if you see smoke. Another thing I left out is that also may be fuel from the pulsation damper on the fuel rail. The damper has a big plastic ugly cap on it, looks ugly, and is usually yellowish becuase its old. ANyways, if theres fuel leaking out of that bitch, you need to fix that pronto.

ANyways, when I first got my car, I didn't know **** all about fuel injection, or even how the rotary worked. I was unsure about alot of things, but after just familiarizing myself with the basics like where the injectors are, the intake manifold where it goes, where the bolts are, the rest was easy to figure out with the haynes. Emission equipment is the most confusing part, but if your planning on removing it anyways, its not that hard.

I remember when I pulled everything off the shortblock, I was a little overwhelmed at getting it all back together, but with the haynes and FSM's and this forum of course, I figure it all out. Now I can take all that **** off in like 5 minutes. I can re-assemble and torque it all down in like 15.

Like I said before, leaking oil, or water, even the slightest will give you constant smoking. It may not be pouring out now, but when the engine is hot and the coolant is under pressure and the o-rings are shot, its gonna flow out on the hot exhaust manifold and smoke like a ************.

Anyways, I've given all the advice to give, you gotta do the rest now.

I forgot to mention one thing, that after we turned the car off, because of the smoke we tried starting it but would just rotate. He has a fuel cut off switch which the last owner put in, but if it was flooded we still could't not get the car turned on.

I did a search on my problem and this guy had the same exact prob, except mine did not smoke out of the exaust and only in that one little spot. Well thank you for the help.
