HELP!!Strangely optioned 1986 RX-7???
HELP HELP HELP HELP
Experts needed!! I thought that I was!
What the hell model did I buy
???????????????????????????????????
This is my sixth RX-7. It is a 1986. I bought it from the original owner, and I still have not titled it. The title is actually showing the FC to be a 1985, although it is a second gen. coupe. Original motor went 275,200 miles until serious overheat. The following confusing options are on the car. The original owner claimed this car to be a GTU, but I know that model was not available with this option list:
1. Car has no rear storage bins AND no rear seat???
2. Car has the Sport package with "Gatorbacks" and Mazda AERO Body Kit, along with flat deck Mazda spoiler
3. Car has GXL style 4 piston calipers (F)
4. Car has 4.30 LSD Rear axle ???
5. Car has CRUISE CONTROL
6. Car has Factory aluminum hood???
7. Car has no power options
8. Car has no sunroof
9. 5 speed, AC, all other Standard features
10. Factory 100 WATT STEREO
11. The instrument panel contains a red light that flashes if the car begins to overheat???
12. Car has the electric adjustable rear suspension, but NO POWER MIRRORS?
The original owner is 65. I beleive that the car was order this way from Mazda, but I do not understand his insisting the car is a GTU. Could you mix GXL and SPORT option as you wanted when buying these cars?
Any help would be appreciated. I am about to drop in a LT1 V8 to replace the toasted rotary, but it would be a crime to modify such a seemingly rare and different FC.

There was no GTU offered in 1986. By no rear storage bins, do you mean there is carpet where the bin openings are supposed to be? I've never seen that in any car other than a base model (mine has it). Are you 100% sure its a 4.30 LSD? I thought they were only on Turbo II models, and those wouldnt fit on an N/A unless the entire drivetrain was swapped. BUT, If it has no sunroof though it HAS to be a base model.
I would say it was a base model with a LOT of custom work done on it.

You have a mixed half breed... probably parts put together from a couple cars. but mostly a 86 Sport.
I doubt you have 4.3 LSD rear end... infact I would bet money you do not, or that the car did not come with it, as the 4.3 rear end was not even available in Japan in 89
And the redlight on the dash is for Electric suplimental Fan failure... not overheating.
What is the VIN? an 85 or an 86 (I know already, but it sounds like you do not, but we can confirm it here).
And in the future, please only hit submit once when posting... I deleted your other 4 threads on this

the 4.3's only came on GTUs N/A S5's, all turbo's had the 4.10's that i know of.
my 86 base has no bins or rear seats, the sport i used to own had no power mirros, but a/c and p/s, with no rear bins, with a LSD. its probably like icemark said, mixed and matched, but mostly sport.

My base model had carpet covering the rear bins,
Do you have 5 lug wheels, I guess so since you have the 4 piston calipers
# 5 mine has
# 6 mine has
# 7 mine has
# 8 mine has
I don't know, sounds cool to me though.
Better than getting an 86 with nothing on it. got lucky i guess. Anyway enjoy
