help removing flywheel

help removing flywheel

ok so ive never done this before but to remove the flywheel im just supposed to take like a prybar to the back and rotate till it comes off? is that the only way is there another

remove the large nut. its a 2 1/8. you'll need a 3/4" drive and an impact gun makes life eaiser. once you remove the nut, smack the outside edge of the flywheel with a good sized hammer. DO NOT smack the surface area of the flywheel or any one of the guide pins. should take maybe two or three whacks with the hammer.

^ yup, just make sure the flywheel doesn't fall on you! I heard it might hurt.

And that socket is hard to find. Around here we only have 2 places that sold them and they were $45 each with a 1/2 to 3/4 inch so it would work on an impact was $15.
If your lucky though, you might be able to find a garage that would loan you one if you leave a deposit.

You need a big 'ol socket (someone remind the size, 2 1/8th of something like that) that fits on an impact gun. You can usually find the big 'ol socket at Sears.

The impact gun with a decent torque setting. There are electric ones, but if you have access to an air compressor, air gun type is best.

Something to hold the flywheel in place (there is a flywheel stopper tool you can borrow from Autozone, but I've gotten away with a standard pry bar into the flywheel teeth braced against the frame) while you impact the nut off.

Hand sledge to knock the flywheel loose. A couple or raps usually is all it takes.

Be VERY careful not to disturb the key (metal nub on the end shaft) as it can be a pita to put back on properly aligned.

if you get the Nut OFF..then Put it back on a Turn or so..get a Pry bar,and a piece of Wood..now Hit the flywheel on the Opposite side with a Hammer(in a Spot where there is no Useable ****..like threads or Surfaces,ETC..) .and Put pressure on the Bar a bit while doin this..it Should Loosen up very Easily..you will KNOW that it is loose when it Either IS noticeably loose(wobbles)loose or the Noise of the HIT changes Tone..the NUT is ON to prevent the Flywheel from Falling on your FOOT!.once the flywheel moves.Undo the nut..done!,..Remember there is a KEY9small Metal piece that is In between the Eccentric shaft and the Flywheel,It keeps the flywheel from Spinning on the Eccentric shaft)..DO NOT LOOSE IT..Grab a Bag,put it in the bag and Tape it to the back of the Engine..that way you have it handy to put it back on..Good luck.

lol the nut was pretty easy to get off for me just put the socket and jumped on the breaker bar lol one try anyway ill try hammering it off thanks people and btw it is supposed to be torqued back down to 350ftlbs right?????

Like Reted says..There is Tight and GoodenTight..With a Breaker bar,about three feet long,and Jumping on it with a say 170 Pound Rx7 Owner..it should be Goodentight!.but ya,somewhere around 3-400 is plenty..and use the "heavy duty" Locktite..

Mazdatrix sells a tool for about 30.00 that stops the fly wheel from spinning when you're removing or TQing it back down. it bolts into the upper two bolt holes on the rear iron and makes life a breaze. Also, harbor frieght sells a tq wrench for about 140.00 that goes up to like 500ft pounds. The trick is to keep the enging from rolling when you're tqing the nut back on. I had to have someone stand on it (the engine).

Get the flywheel stopper and the flywheel wrench, then smack a safe spot a few times hard with a brass hammer (ideally), or VERY CAREFULLY with a steel hammer.

A dead blow WILL NOT WORK.

You can also get verrry creative in removing it but it puts your rear iron at risk from cracking the sockets for the screws (tranny to iron) It's best to get the appropriate tools or doing it the right way before your down a couple hundred bucks because you were rushing the process.

Once the nut is removed, you can get a rubber mallet (sand) and lightly bang it - "Vibration" will slowly loosen it.

Atleast thats the way I've heard and done it myself.

Don't need no stinkin' stopper...
Impact gun will take it off with no stopper.
Hell, my Craftsman Pro electric rated only at 260lb-ft will usually work.
If it's stubborn, a torch helps.

I only use a regular hammer nowadays.
No need for a sledge...

I just recommended what I felt was reasonable for the discussion. Not everyone has impact guns or things like that. I know I dont - but thats besides the fact
