help! problem with temp gauge

my temp gauge is acting weird, i think i need a new temp sensor but need to make sure its not anything else. when i put the key into the acc position with the car off the temp reads from cold and climbs to hot slowly, then wen i turn on the car it drops and doesnt read the temp any time. its on a 86 with a turbo swap. any ideas? wiring isues? im looking for the temp gauge at the parts store but they offer so many diff ones. each time i order it, its the wrong one. i see that theres two sensors on the motor and right next to each other near the thermostat housin, which is which? thanks

the sensor you are looking for is located on the driver side top of the rear iron, the two on the back of the water pump do not send any info to the guage, they serve the ECU and the aux fans. there are two different types of these for the s4, just look and see which kind it is and compare it to the ones you will find at the mazdatrix web site, electrical section. may be wiring, but probably the sensor.
