What Year of RX7 do you have?..Be specific..is it an S4(86-88) or an S5?(1989-91).
the S5's are prone to throwing the ECU into Limp Mode, especially if the Electrical Oil Pump is disconnected or Bad,
let us know,be more specific, and someone here can help~!

i am having sort of the same problem. it doesnt want to go over 4000. and when i punch it, the rpms just drop like i turned off the car and it backfires and shoots a flame and smells horribly like it is getting too much gas. i checked EVERYTHING! i dont know what it could be. maybe someone will see both of our posts and have some info for us. sorry i couldnt help you.

my car did the same thing a while back. seemed like it would run great till i was driving. wot seemed normal till 4k then it seemed like the engine would hit a brick wall. i ended up cleaning the contacts on my TPS and it has worked fine ever since. funny thing is i didnt even touch anything under the hood for it to start, it just happened out of the blue.

The car is a 87 n/a with a atkins rebuilt and rebuilt injectors. It has block off plates and no emisions and no cat. like i said it will idle and rev up fine. it only has a 4000 hesation when it runs with a load . i have checked the tps once with a volt meter and a ohm meter. the tps drops out when your releasing the plunger.

please help thanks for all the help.

i had this when i was n/a. i cleaned out the tps, and maf and it still did it. but i remember when i was running it i would see a light come on but i couldnt really catch cause i was looking at my cluster to hard. but then i believe it was the C.E.L. but the weird thing was i left my dome light on one drunk night, and it drained my battery. so when i tried to jump it but the battery was bad. (wouldnt hold charge) so then i let it sit from the wensday to the friday when i got paid to buy a new battery. and when i install the new battery it started up fine and i didnt have the problem again. i did a search and found out that when you take terminals off it kind of resets the cpu. then i drove it like that for about 3 months then i did a cosmo swap. but try taking the neg terminal off for like a night and see how that goes. maybe you cpu is throwing a code and it might just reset the cpu. it wont hurt to try.

i found out what my problem was....the oil metering pump. i used a mechanical instead of electric on a 91 s5 with an 86 swap. come to find out that the connectors need to be connected or somehow grounded so that the car wont go into the retarded state, otherwise known as "limp mode".

What is opening your 5/6th ports? DO you have a backpressure tube?

pick up coil is the leading coil right behind the driverside headlight. if your car is not reving over 4000 rpm, then i would check the coil packs leading and trailing. all you have to do is take off the plug wires from the coils and see if they spark when you try to start it. you will of course need two people for this. i am almost 100% sure that you are going to need a new coil or maybe both. let me know if its the leading coil, i have an extra one that i can part with.

My car did this a couple weeks ago. My fuel pressure dropped right around the 4k rpm mark. I pulled the access cover and the pump and found that the pump sock had come off and was laying on the floor of the tank about a foot away from the pump. I went ahead and replaced the sock with a new one and she redlines all the way to 8k now.

This is normally associated with dirty or corroded grounds. Primarily the one underneath the intake manifold.

You only need to disconnect the negative terminal for 30 secs to reset the ECU.

i had this happen to me 15 years ago with my 86 na. It turns out I was stupid enough to leave my oil checking rag under the hood. It got sucked into the air cleaner and plugged the filter. This probably wont help you but just a reminder to check the simple stuff first. - fuel, air
