Help me convince parents to get me FC instead of Volvo 240
#28
I'm 19, and the Rx-7 is my first car too. personally, I think it was a lot easier to both learn to drive, and drive around this car than any mushy compact sedan. I think it is a great car to learn in. The visibility is excellent, it is small, light, nimble package that is easy to keep a handle on, and it has extremely superior handling and braking. A big heavy 4 door sedan is a trap by comparison! Why would anyone feel safe in a car with less capability than a car with more capability? Seriously people, if size and safety of slowness that comes with it is a good thing for a new driver, then maybe I should have learned to drive in a Greyhound bus.

I'm all about new drivers having a big slow car as their first car.
My first car was my 86 Civic sedan, it wasn't really on the big side, but it was a slow ****.
You'll learn to drive on the slow Volvo (which is RWD), and learn what stuff you would want to improve on with your next car (FC RX-7?).
Volvo's are great cars too, my friend had a 85 he drove through high school, and it had 240,000 miles and ran great.
That thing could take a beating too, we would "rally" race it through construction sites, and he smacked a stop sign going 40 and it just dented that big ol' steel bumper.

I cant remember his name, Silk something, rolled his FC I think. Maybe look for some posts on the racing forum by him. There may be some pictures

A Volvo 240 is a great car. I would recommend a 240 to a first time driver. I had one, and then I upped to an FC.
Princess Di's car wasn't an SL600. It was an S-class, but I'm not sure of the engine size. Probably an S500. And no, those aren't supposed to be the safest cars in the world.

Yea man I drove an suv for my first car then got my rx-7 and that **** about me going sidways, i was not over exagerating at all you should have seen my arms man ive never moved them in a circular motion that fast ever. I wasnt gonna let the thing spin. All you need to know it if you go sideways DONT EVER hit the brakes and push the clutch in and hold it in or take the car out of gear. if i would have got scared and hit the brakes i would have spun around or went over the curb. and mabe got hit by multiple cars. my freind just yesterday went kinda sidways and kept the cutch out in gear and hit his brakes and almost totaled his fd. your car wants to go straght all you have to do is point the wheels where you want to go and dont let power get to the wheels(take clutch out or take it out of gear) and never never hit the brake, brakes are for not hitting somone infront of you.

As far as safety in a crash vs. the volvo. Volvo's are definately sturdy cars, but the FC can hold its own. I know a guy who hit an 18-wheeler head on when he fell asleep at the wheel. Both of them were going about 50 mph. He got away with nothing more than a couple of scratches, but sadly, his car was totaled.

Here is what you tell them:
hahaha.
Seriously though, RX7’s are grate cars, but they are far from reliable and terribly inefficient.
Insurance isn’t very expensive for N/A RX7’s. Insurance is much more dependent on age and driving record than the kind of car you drive.
As for an RX7 being a bad choice for a young driver, I don’t think so. Young drivers drive like lunatics, get in accidents, and die no matter what kind of car they are driving.
I think you should buy an RX7 that is not running (not very hard to find) and fix it up (put a new engine in it). Build yourself a respectable tool set along the way, learn how to work on cars, and end up with a car that you can truly be proud of and appreciate.
I can’t genuinely love cars without enjoying working on them.
“Mommy, I want a car that gets the gas mileage of dads old truck but makes the horsepower of grandmas civic.”

Then i was leaving school once and just turned right and gave it hardly any gas and the car went totaly sideways and started sliding to the curb so i counter steared and went totaly sidways the other way to that curb, when i almost hit that i went back the otherway sidways then back again the other way finnaly i got it straight, but that wasnt the end, i let the clutch out cuz i finally had control and guess what it went totaly sideways again then back the otherway sidways
Jesus you must have had some sh#tty tires!!! (and a bad driver to)
sucks you had to experience it,
WHATS WRONG WITH YOU!!!! Stuff like that is fun!!!

A BAD driver??? what dude ive never been i a wreak once. if i was a bad driver i would have ended up over a curb facing the wrong direction or getting my car totaled by the cars behind me. **** happens man it hand rained in a couple months and it just had started raining. Meaning oild is setting ontop of water making it slick.
Yearrgh I really dont know where the wheels are when im sideways i just know do what comes natural. I get sidways all the time(i like drifting)

I'm also all about big FWD cars as a first car. I've got a 91 4-door 5-speed Accord, and I still race it at SCCA. Contrary topopular belief 125hp and decent torque can still take you places, like a few places ahead of a few mustangs.
The Swedish bricks are awesome cars to drive. They're not the best sports cars in the world, but they're cars. I mean, they're safe - no doubt about that one; they're quick on their wheels - can you argue with more torque than hp on an N/A?; and they're reliable - everything is Bosch. The downside of that is that you'll be paying out your *** if anything breaks.
In other words, learn to drive a big, slow car first.
P.S. Have you ever noticed that going from something bad to something good is easy, and you handle it much better than people who have the good thing from the beginning, yet going from something good to something bad is a complete bitch and it takes you aq while to get adjusted to not having everything where you want, as fast as you want, or as agile as you want?

Its a great car but it requires skill and skill can only be attained after driving a good amount of years. Your prob not going to listen at the age your at and prob just gonna get that car anyway, but please if you have any common sense dont buy an Rx7 as your first car, odds are you going to destroy the car
Listen get a beater with a manual tranny, somthing slow like an older DSM perhaps, get used to stick shifting and just get some experience driving before you get into a sports car like an Rx7. Youll be doing yourself a lot as well as the car.

well thanks alot for the help guys i think ive pretty much decided not to get a FC. I think maybe a 91 crx 5-speed would be an ok first car. if my parents still want me in a volvo ill try to convince them to get the 740 turbo cause that ***** pretty pimped lol. or maybe an old benz my friends mom has one and the back seat is like a big couch . Honestly i see myself as a pretty responsible kid when it comes to things that could get you killed. I think i would just do fine with a NA FC, and could take really good care of it. with a little slow practice I think i could handle it well, but what really turned me away was all the insurance and crap. Also, if I bought an FC id want to modify it and could potentiallly waste all my FD money which ive been saving for a while. ( and i am trying to find a job. I live in NJ and cant really geta real job unless its a paper route or an under the table job and ive already had both at one point.)
Thanks

He will probly end up suping it up. I know if i had a honda to start out with it would have been suped up by the end. As sayd before i had 5-speed GMC Jimmy got Dual flows, and a k&n then decided to cut a hole in the front of my suv to get more air(worked and you couldnt see it cuz it was behind the grill but sucked in water) I raced it alot and off roaded it alot then decided to install hedders(wich was the biggest bitch to install i have to add) but eventualy i Blew my tranny out and and screwed my clutch racing it at the track. Still workin on fixing it now. But anyways if you want a fast car you will make it no matter what you have im sure if he gets the volvo it will end up with something on it.

I have a 91 honda CRX and a TII. The CRX was my first car, and a great first car at that. It is definately good to learn on a manual FWD car. You have less chance of spinning out or doing something really stupid, but it is like driving a really fast gokart its so small. Have fun with whatever you get, and hopefully you will get that FD someday.

n4ji: you edited that post :P S600 maybe (I was thinking S500 because I'm not sure if the S600 was out yet) but it wasn't an SL because those are two doors. Heh.
And thank you for the comment about my sig. I shouldn't have had to lose my mom at 19, but it's people like you that help me cope.

Tell them that you'll also need garage space b/c you'll be fixing it all the time and never driving it. Then you might get it! Just so long as they can lose their garage.
I thought I already posted to this, but if I didn't, I'll sell you my '86 NA w/ 63k miles on the clock. Great car with a perfect GXL gray leather interior.
