Help identify part, sensor on engine

I found this today while tightening a belt, and looking around trying to figure out my coolant problem (will not get coolant from overflow, will only put it in overflow). This sensor is on an 89 n/a, it's on the drivers side of the car, there are a couple of these sensors, this one, the little 'neck' that sticks out for a hose to attach is broken off in the hose. Sorry for the crummy pics, camera phone...

EDIT: The sensor looks the same as the one with the tan electrical connector on it. The one that is broken is right behind that one. With the white connector (sensor is removed)

It's one of the solenoids for the emissions system.

There should be two relief solenoid valves and two switching solenoid valves. All 4 are located near each other.

The solenoid pictured is a relief solenoid valve.

No. There is but one Relief solenoid and but one Switching solenoid.

The white is for the VDI solenoid. White elect connector is what I mean. No VDI action means loss of power. See the free online series five FSM and the FUEL AND EMISSIONS section for pictures.

I couldn't find one online. I was buying an oil cooler from a guy and he happened to have the assembly with these on it. I feel lucky!

all the solenoids operate the same way, you can orient the breather on any of the nipples that you need, all you need is to find a new solenoid off a junk parts car.

So what do people do when they can't find these? What about when they stuff a rotary into another car? Or do they just not make it emissions legal. I got the whole assembly, there are 5 of these things on it, for $10.

if you can't find one then you probably never actually tried looking.
