help on getting a CA smogable exhaust set up

well I'm looking for a cheap exhaust set up but i don't know much and ive search but i need one that's smog-able in CA i want some horsepower willing to spend about $200

well i talked to some shops and one told me he would sell a high flow catalytic converter by magnaflow for $100 the only high flow i found near here

let me know what i should get or tell me your set ups

since the car is a 1991 n/a rx7 it has 2 pre-converters the main then the 2 mufflers
im not sure what to do

Off the top of my head, I thought s5's only had 1 pre-cat, not 2? Anyway, whatever you put on has to be CARB certified. Is the magnaflow? No idea. Basically, CA people are screwed on the exhaust. About the only thing I know of you can do is to put on a new catback, which honestly doesn't do a whole lat if you still have all the cats.

Check your cats and see how they look. I have seen a few cats fall apart. If they are fine then leave them alone. You could hollow out the 2 precats but I would do only if they are busted up. My 88 passed smog with only the main cat.

If you want to go cheap then just get a y-pipe and leave the stock mufflers on. I would suggest saving and buying some quaility Racing beat mufflers New/used.

save up more money then, because you can't get anything close to a FC exhaust for $200, unless you don't care if it only lasts a week.

The $100 magnaflow is a replacement cat... you won't gain any power.

i run one main cat (brand new when smogged) and a pipe i made to delete the pre cats, it already had some midas single muffler set up its a lil louder than stock. (its my street set up 6 ports work great)

if you can weld and get the pipe for free you could swing something better for $200 but its not going to last forever.

there are no cheap high flow cats (the bonez one is like $250 or so) just grab a catco cat and save up for a RB system ($500 or so used)

Get a test pipe with flanges made and take the section with cats out when you want to have fun. Then, put the section with cats back in when you have to smog it. Only thing is, a test pipe looks like a test pipe. A stock pipe that has been gutted is even better. Probably not for flow, but the police cannot tell it is gutted just by looking at it. Just a thought.

+10 on saving your money and getting something good. Go with duals unless you want it to be loud. Duals look better as well, IMO.

I have a corksport presilencer that fits the stock main cat location, and it just gets swapped out with a big GM cat that has the stock flangers welded on whenever I go smog the car. Besides cutting sound a bit, it looks like a cat if anyone goes poking around undeneath the car.

You don't need your cat setup to be CARB certified either. Unless you're taking the car to a state referee, the average smog tech won't spend more than 2 seconds looking at your cats with a mirror. I haven't had one mention my lack of precats (replaced with a downpipe), but I'd guess that's mainly because they have no idea what it came with stock. Besides, the precats are only there to reduce emissions when the engine is cold. During a test the car is warm, so all you need is a good main cat.

OP, Don't go cheap on the catalytic converter. I made the mistake of buying a cheap one and it was burned up in less than 3 months. There are several places in which to get a rotary specific cat. (Made to withstand the higher temps)

yea thats why you swap it out when you smog and run a test pipe during the other time.

Maybe I'm crazy. . . but I like having a good high flow cat. It keeps emissions clean, and stops the flames and smell. Also, I find doing an annual exhaust makeover to be quite irritating.

Of course I realize that most of you enjoy the sound/smell/fire/etc.
