Help ! : Exaust Question

Hiya everyone.... I recently finished rebuilding an 86 n/a rx7 with my buddy in August... It is ported, and the exhaust silencers were removed from the engine as well for more power.. It goes into a header and from there it has one cat (which is empty anyways) and then goes back to duel exhaust.. The sound of my exhaust was real lousy, So i removed the hollowed out cat, and had it replaced with a glass pack...to reduce some volume. (the exhaust is real loud, and has an almost metallic sound to it when it rev's up) The sound is a little better but i still dont like it much (cant drive with the window open and talk on the phone), and its to raspy. The two mufflers that are on there now are monza mufflers, with monza crome tips, although the resonators in the crome tips are , all gone i think anyways.. What would be my best course of action ??? I want something cheap and effective that will last, and hopefully make make my car sound nice. I was thinking of even going to a single exhaust !! any ideas' ?? I have a friend who might sell me a walker muffler offa his car (lifetime warranty) how do they sound ?? Can anyone recommend a type of muffler that gives good flow and is affordable that sounds good with a ported rotary ???? WHat is the best setup for my engine?? any help is greatly appreciated...

You just want the muffler? I think people have had good things to say about Racing Beat exhausts. That and the Apexi N1 is a popular choice. I know you can order just a muffler from Racing Beat, but I don't know about Apexi.

All the people I know put glass packs on their cars to make them louder. It will also burn out really quickly, as it probably wasnt designed for a rotary.

Racing Beat is 220 each, but 1 muffler is louder than 2. Duh

Monza mufflers can be a big problem

I don't know how much money you plan on spending but if you want a with a Full Racing Beat system I think you'd be happy with the results. They usually produce a nice tone that is subtle and low below 4000rpm and starts sounding like a large crotch rocket (higher pitch) in upper RPMs. Just my 2¢

Flowmasters? glass packs??? what are you thinking... the exhaust temp of a rotary is 3 times a piston car??? You'll burn them out in no time...

It sound like you are trying to go cut rate on mufflers for a rotary which really just means your gonna spend as much money in the long run as you would if you just bought the RB or HKS set up. You'll just get to replace your glass packs 3 or 4 times in the process.

BTW: I don't know any NA rotary that a glass pack has lasted more than 6 months in... most burn out within 6 weeks, and I have seen a couple burn out within 6 hours.

hehe the glass pack is my presilencer... (right after my header) in the place where the cat would normally be... Yah im not sure how flowmasters would work... if they will burn out quick than im not gonna bother with them...

just wanna get some ideas... i bought the car this summer, and put tonsa money into it, and now im pretty much broke.. so im just looking for a cheap option... maybe i can find an rx and a wrecker with the stock exhaust still on and get some cheap mufflers... argh.!!

!

Hey man, I have the exact same setup with headers and a ported engine- LOUD! I am running edelbrock stainless mufflers in the back with ceramic packing- Straight through. They have a good sound but very loud. I am going to be replacing the cat with a borla muffler- all stainless. You have to get high temp material in order to handle the 2000 degree temps! Fiberglas is usually only good to about 1200!
Oh, Pacesetter(Monza) SUCKS!!! I would definatly replace those with HKS, Borla, or Greddy stainless systems.. You get what you pay for, you'll thank yourlself later- TRUST ME!

The flowmasters should last you a good 2 - 3 weeks. :p

Like everyone else said, you can't go cheap on NA rotary mufflers.

PS: Don't listen to your pistonhead friends anymore; they are a bad influence on you.

I totally agree with you guys.. if i had the cash, i would go with dual Apexi N1's on the back..... hehe with big ricer fart tips.. but i dont have any coin.. after the whole purchase of the car etc....until i get the cash for good mufflers i want to put something on that wont get me pulled over for having my car to loud..... If i could pick up some stock mufflers from an rx7 would that be quiet in the mean time ?? im not sure what the oem mufflers are like, but i probably could pick some up from a wrecker or something....

???

Check out Racing Beat they are selling off the remainder of thier older style black mufflers for $398. a pair.Their new ones are all polished stainless. They will bolt right on to the stock Y-pipe.With headers they aren't real quiet but as long as you run a pre-silence/pre-muffler or a cat it shouldn't be loud enough to get pulled over but I don't think a glasspack will work.Like evryone else says it will have to have steel wool or ceramic packing. Here is a link to the mufflers and one to thier site.

The only way you'll come out cheaper stock is to get them from the junkyard, buy them used from somebody, or if someone give them to you.Stock mufflers from the dealer are something close to $300 dollars each and they suck anyway so I wouldn't use them unless they were given to me.Check out the parts trader sometimes you can find a good deal from somebody selling a used system on there.

No that is only partially correct. The T2 mufflers would be much louder.

The OEM Mazda T2 muffers have less noise reduction than the NA versions.

The T2's have that nice turbo to cut out half the sound... the NA just have the exhaust baffle (other than the stock cats).

silly boy.

Glasspacks, and flow masters, and walkers are for novas, and firebirds, and camaros, and trucks, and vans...not for imports.

and here, we dont call them ricer fart tips. they are standard issue. our cars dont FART, they growl. when i putter around the parking lot, in 1st gear, below 2000, it sounds like a tiger or lion snarling. if you have a big polished stainless steel muffler w/ a 4" tip on it, thats fine. thats how it should be. BUT< if you have a stupid 1 7/8" pipe, and ADD a big 4" chrome tip to the end of it, THEN tahts ricey, and Farty. us RX7 owners are above that.

my exhaust is manifold-precat1 (gutted)-2 1/4" pipe- single apex N1.

its the loudest thing this side of a 454 chevelle w/ open headers. this thing sets off almost any car alarm w/ a vibration sensor, no matter HOW far its tuned down.

if you dont like the sound of the car, put the original mufflers back on. thatll make it quiet. otherwise, try not to complain about the noise. the only way to quiet an exhaust, is to dampen the pulses, the only way to do that on OUR rotary cars, is to run it thru many baffles. any time you do that, you reduce flow, and reduce POWER!

the only way youre gonna have a fast car, generally speaking, is to uncork the exhaust. its a fact of life.

my recommendation to you is:

lose the glasspack, its probably had all the 'glasspacking' burned out of it by now, and is useless. get a universal fit Arospeed Bomb series muffler, the tuneable type. or an Apex Dunk, or Apex N1. all these mufflers can have a baffle inserted in the end of the tip. and it quiets down the car quite a bit. itll make it sensible, and police-friendly... if thats what youre goin for.

i, myself, would go for the "Hey look at me, here i am" exhaust set up. and thats what i got. its Really Loud, Looks street legal, and shoots flames. and if i ever Needed too, i could put the baffle in, and make it quieter. anywho, just my $.02

i was going to stay with quiet, until...

i heard these rotaries with open exhuast. My TII needed that open exhuast, you can't beat the performance gain. For the most part, if you stay at low rpm's, it's not that loud. I drive past AF gate guards everyday and they haven't said anything.
