So, I think I'll get this spring and pellet, stick it in the bolt, bolt it to 90 pounds, start it up, and drive it away.

OR

Take the front cover off and stare because I have no idea what I'm looking for.

As much as I appreciate everyone's input and help, I obviously have little to no knowledge here, and most of what you're saying is really going over my head. Most of the terms you are using and explanations you are giving do not make any sense to me. I am sorry.

It sounds like I can bolt and hope or spend my next few weekends trying to take apart the front cover of this engine that likely doesn't need to be taken apart.

Kevin, I hate to reply to your message, but your porting job actually ended up in my engine blowing at 18K miles. When the engine was taken apart, two very large holes had eaten through your ports. I would repost those pictures, but I get sad when I look at them. Moreover, I'd forgotten until you brought it up.

Do you have any fellow rotary guys in the area that would be willing to help? It really is not hard to do. put the car up, oil pan bolts in the front, main pulley(hard part is done if the bolt is out, lol) Coolant neck. All bolts are visible, and all you need is a rachet and a 12(IIRC). Its about 2 hours of work to get it off, then ask us what to do, its really simple actually.

I'd be taking it back to whom ever rebuilt it for you 4 months ago and demanding results.

if the bearing fell, can it be realigned with the engine still in the car? or do you have to pull the engine to get the bearing not to fall off again when you put the front cover back on?

It appears that everything can be done with the engine still in the car. It looks like oil pan comes off, front plate comes off, and that's that. Then everything goes back together. Easier said than done though.

I would take it back to the guy, but I'm not towing this car 2 hours again. I'm done towing.

Two questions:
1. Is there no way to see if the bearing fell without taking the front cover off? Probably not I guess. And
2. What sort of damage might I be looking at if I just bolted it back on and hoped the bearing didn't fall? I mean, obviously I'd need a new bearing, but the work load would be the same as if I went ahead and took the oil pan and front cover off first, right?

Thanks.

3. One more question. Where do I get this pellet?

http://www.mazdatrix.com/getprice.as...m=11-D150-N326

Is this it for $51.50? I see the spring on the previous page costs $1.76. Also, I can't find one on eBay.

Care to look again? You're asking questions that've already been answered.

Atkins rotary sells the solid pellet replacement for 10 bucks or so. As do several other vendors. DO not buy another stock pellet.

You'll drain coolant and oil, remove the fan and shroud, the waterpump housing/waterpump/alternator/airpump assembly, the PS/ac pumps, the ps/ac bracket, crank angle sensor, oilpan, and then the front cover comes off. For someone skilled and experienced it's a day's worth of work unless you bust ***.

********. Is there no way to see if the bearing fell without taking the front cover off? Probably not I guess. And******************

You can tell if the thin bearing fell down by making the measurement I cited in a couple of post above.

The pan does not need to be removed. Only the bolts that hold it on that are common to the front cover.

I saw your earlier post HAILERS, and I would like to just measure. I'm sure I will understand once the front cover is off. Right now I just can't visualize what needs to be done.

Also, the last sentence about the bolts in common makes sense. Sounds better not having to take more apart. Thanks!

this had happened to a good friend of mine a while ago...luckily we got to it right after it happened...its fairly simple really..you dont even have to go as far as pulling the oil pan off. we just took the bolts out of the front of the oil pan that go into the front cover(just read hailers said same thing). all in all i think it took about 2-3 hours to rip it apart, fix it, and get it all back together. with some decent help you shouldnt have anything to worry about

So everything went well and the car runs now. However, I have a very small oil leak coming from the front of my oil pan. Do I have to replace the gasket? I think a motor mount goes through the oil pan, so I guess I'd have to.... what?
