Haynes Manuals

I want to buy a Haynes manual but I only see 1986-1991 and 1986-1989 manuals. Do they make a 1989-1991 for the s5? or will either of those work on a 1989 TII?

Hmmm...my haynes manual is 86-88.

I dont think I have ever seen one for 89-91. But then again...I really havent looked.

all the pics ive seen, the cover either says 1986-1991 or 1986-1989

i have the haynes manual for 1986-1991... u should be able to use either one .. but go to the library and see what the difference in them are...

does the manual have walk throughs on things like installing new fuel injectors and things like that?

It gives basic steps, but in a lot of aspects, it's better than the FSM. The FSM just goes into more detail.

If you dont have the FSM (Factory Service Manual), you can download it from the FAQ in the 2nd Gen forum.

I have the 86-91 one. Mine covers all models and when there are differences in how something is done for the different years it tells about it. I actually rarely use it since I have the FSM which I like much better. Still the Haynes good to have. I've used them plenty on other vehicles.

I have the FSM on my harddrive and a Haynes Manual (86-91). I go to the Hayne's first and if it doesn't go into enough detail I print out the page I need from the FSM.

Look under "FAQ"

Read the FAQ tehn read the archives, then read the FAQ again. Then work on your car for 6 months.....Go back and reread the FAQ and ARchives you'll be amazed at how much info they slipped into the FAQ in just 6 months!!

i have the 86-91, came with the car . . . its helpful, its slowly preparing me for major engine work . . i wish the vac/emission sections had more precise and descriptive pictures though, b/c i need to keep that stuff on my car

Nobody is baggin on you. I just stumbled across the FAQ when I first joined. I read it all but didn't grasp it all. After reading 100s of threads on this forum, and working on the 7. I posted a question that was covered in the FAQ. I went back and re-read it. It seemed as if it was a different FAQ after getting some practical experience. I printed the list of abbreviations and hung them up behind my computor for quick reference. You have to learn the 7 language (i.e. FDP, UIM, FC3S, BAC, etc.)

Don't worry too much about the vac stuff. When removing make sure to leave all the little hoses hooked up and oriented. When you get down to the short block one of the last things to come off is the vac/wiring harness. It lifts off and takes the whole gaggle of **** with it, including injectors. Just lay the whole thing aside where it can't get hit or stepped on. After you rebuild your short block, the first thing you are going to reach for is the vac/wiring harness. Hopefully you left everything where it was. After 15 years its hard to rebend a brittle vac hose or rebend a hardened wire so everthing falls back into place. Here is where the work begins. When you put a component back on the Short block if it has a vac line, THIS is when you replace the vac line. Once you figure out that you have to hook up the end to the nipple, you then take off the old line and replace it with a nice new supple rubber vac hose.......move on. If you do it this way you'll get it right.
