Hawk HPS Questions

I ordered Hawk HPS pads for both axles. The rear set came with shims but the front did not.

Was this on purpose? (I found something about them being built-in from a search)

If not, is there generic ones I can buy or do I have to get Hawk HPS specific?

Am I correct to assume that using the old shims is a very bad idea?

Also, I found conflicting information on this (surprise surprise). Where does the anti-squeel go? Between the shim and the caliper, shim and pad, or both?

same thing happened to me, so im guessing it was on purpose. I just cleaned up the old ones and made sure they weren't too screwed up to use again. Mazdatrix now sells all those little brake parts: http://www.mazdatrix.com/j-1brake.htm (second category down)

as for the anti-squeel, i bought it but had the same question, so i didn't use it (i figured i'd try it with-out first, and if squeeling became a problem then i'd use it). I haven't had any squeeling yet though, and im almost ready for new pads.

good luck

Well my old pads look pretty good but I think I'm going to put the Hawk's on anyways.

Hmmm, maybe I'll leave the old ones on for now. I have to machine the rotors when I put on new pads don't I?

They look and feel pretty good. I'm just going to put the new pads on. I probably couldn't even afford getting the rotors machined anyways.

And now I have a very audible vibration noise coming from the right rear that gets worse if I turn left.

Its always a good idea to get your rotors turned when you put new pads on.

It is normaly about $10 to $15 per rotor.

As for the anti-squeel. All over the back of the pad, on the back of the middle shim, on the back of the final shim. One packet should last you one axel, or two calipers. So dont be afraid to use a lot.

Be warned though. you will turn black from the grease in the anti-squeel collecting dust from your calipers.

DONT FORGET TO BED THE BRAKES PROPERLY!
(did this yesterady)

oh, and I put some on the retaining bolt that holds the pads in the caliper. Makes gettign the bolt back in MUCH easier

Yeah, I definitely fucked something up. I'm getting a vibration/noise at any speed. It lessens if I give it gas (even if I don't speed up). It lessens (a bit) when I hit the brakes, although it doesn't go away.

I didn't think this was something I could screw up considering it involves taking 6 bolts off and rotating something...

did you tighten the rotor retaining screws down well enough? Check to see if they are or have backed out.

you can run the rotors without those screws. I don't think it's that.

Are those the 3 large headed screws? I noticed the wheel in question (at least I think that's where the problem is) was missing one, but it's been like that for a while because I didn't touch the rotors. I simply took the old pads out, turned the piston a few times (get it to clear the new pads), and put the new pads in.

That piston was very hard to turn. Maybe it didn't "re-seat" itself or something. Ugh, I need this fixed, it's my daily driver.

I'd search for this but the f'in search is screwed up. I did an EXTREMELY simple search for "vibration" and, among other problems, it didn't even find a single thread from 2006. You can't tell me that's working right...

What would happen if the piston didn't readjust itself? I had to turn it until there was clearance on the pad. Could it cause a bad vibration if the pad still had some clearance?
