my fc got hit by a car rolling out of a parking lot and insurence deemed it totalled because of how old it was, even though it was a new front shock and a fender. i paid 1500 for it and somehow i got 4,000 for it. it's actually worth more but i fixed it myself so they had to take some money off the price that it's worth. it's not just our cars though, it's all old rwd imports. silvias, ae86, everything is going up in price because of how popular drifting is now becoming and how import car companies arn't making cheap rwd car's anymore (miata's are probably the cheapest but they still are around the 20,000 price range).

Of course it also likely means paying a bit extra for the 'classic car coverage'....

Most states require 25yrs old and classic insurance to get historic plates.
Some collector insurance companies take cars as new as 15yrs old, some want 20 or 25.
Some classic companies won't take RX-7's or Z's, such as Grundy.
JC Taylor will take RX-7's if they are 20 yrs old-had it on my '79 RX-7, I have American Collectors on my '88 RX-7, they will take 15 yr old cars.

does it typically cost more to get classic car insurance?
and I just kbb'd my car, it came out to be 4700 which is how much i paid for it from a dealer after taxes 2 years ago. So I guess I did pretty well, lol. I wish it would be worth more though since it's a 10th ann.

BS, a car with 120,000 orig miles and orig engine is not worth as much as a car with 120,000 miles and a 2,000 mile engine.
cars with major mods do fetch more money. modded supra's going over 100k sometimes.
nice try though.

That's true, a rebuild adds value, but unless you're selling to an enthusiast, mods generally depreciate the value, because it's assumed that the car was abused and is therefore more likely to break, or wear out sooner.
The cars that are well built and well documented can be sold for more, but aftermarket wheels and a fart can exhaust don't add anything. Even for the $100k Supras, they probably are $20k cars with $150K+ in mods in them.
You'll NEVER make money by modding these things, you'll never even break even, 50 cents on the dollar is a good return for mods when selling the car.

Catch is the limitations-you must have another daily driver for each licensed driver in the house, some have mileage limitations, not supposed to use for work-pleasure only.

In BC collecors insurance is only available on cars 25+ years old that are STOCK. The car is for pleasure use only (MAX 2 trips to work/month IIRC), and there's a milage limitation. My dad had it on his Triumph and it saved a lot of money, plus you get collector car plates.
My car's worth $5045 apparently (I said Blaine WA for the location, since it's the closest American city to here).

KBB is completely bogus.
Have you ever asked yourself where KBB gets the numbers that they generate? Try to find out. You cannot.
Try putting different zip codes in. The numbers come out the same. The zip code helps them MARKET ads and products to you, it does not tell you what the cars are selling for in your area.
KBB is basically an advertising site, pushing ads at car buyers.
Don't believe me?
Enter the zipcode for NEW YORK CITY 10044 run your car.
Open a new browser window and
enter the zip code for MUSKOGEE, OK, 74401 run your car
Open an new browser window and
Enter the zipcode for DOUBLE OAK TX, 75077 run your car.
Try Atlanta GA. 30303
They all came out the same, didn't they?
You will find a little difference if you enter a California zipcode, maybe $500-800, but they rate it for the same price whether you live in rural little Santa Maria or if you live in great big San Francisco. Do you really think that car in Santa Maria fetches the same price as the car in San Fran?
The answer is, they make the prices up. Really.
KBB talks around the issue alot and you can spend lots of time in the FAQ and you will not find a claim that they base the wholesale prcing on wholsale sales, that the retail pricing is based on retail sales etc.
Just for the record, have any of the sales on this site been reported to KBB? These would be part of the private party sales date, right? Has KBB contacted any of you about a private party auto sale, ever?Where do they get THOSE numbers??
They make them up. Really.

On newer cars I think they really do base it on the retail sale prices of cars and adjust the other prices accordingly, but its pretty much a shot in the dark for older cars because they rarely see dealers. I usually look at edmunds.com since they are generally more reliable, at least from what I've seen.

I'm giving you the B.S. meter now. After market mods do lower the value of the vehicle. If you or I are going to look at a RX7 and we see that it has been tastefully modded and it's a job well done we'll probably pay more because it's worth more to you or I. However, it is NOT worth more to the general masses because it has THIS, THAT, and THE OTHER THING. Most of that crap nobody cares about and won't pay a penny extra for.
I wouldn't pay a damn dime over book value for a car that has been modded. I would offer them less. Plain and simple. My S5 TII was modded, Mazdatrix installed the full exhaust and FCD, and I paid $1500 less than KBB suggested. It also has a Mazda reman with 20k.
Don't tell me nice try. Don't compare modded 2nd generation RX-7's to 93.5+ TT Supra's. There are reasons Supras go for $50,000 on ebay and FC's do $2,000 here and there. Apples and oranges.

When an informed seller sells a modded car to an enthusiast then they can get more for the mods. Yes, the general public will say less, but then don't sell it to them.

The last few S5 Turbo IIs I sold went for 8k, 10k, 12k and finally 13k.
There was probably about one or two years in between each sale (roughly), though each one was nicer than the previous, so that could explain some of the increase.
These values are as recent as last month.

Just did my two RX's and was shocked.
'86 Base, no frills, 126000, good condition. private party value of $3400.
'87 T2, loaded, 146000, good condition. Private party value of $3500.
WTF! Yeah, the T2 has 20k more on it, but its loaded and only worth $100 more!
