Has anyone heard of an automatic TII
My 91 NA has lost the auto tranny and I can't do the manual swap yet. Found someone who has a tranny for really cheap, but he says it came out of a 91 turbo. I've searched and everything I can find only shows the TII as being a five speed. I suppose some lame *** could have put an auto into a turbo. Any one know where the ID plate on those transmissions would be. Can't find any thing about it in the FSM. Thanks for the help all.

There are no turbo automatics. Zero. Period. The automatics for these cars suck so horribly that if you put one on a turbo, you'd be slower than a 5speed non-turbo.. probably. Anyway, the point is that Mazda never made a turbo auto, so if some guy has one, he's lying, find another person to buy from.

RX-7 Turbo automatics were available everywhere else in the world except North America. And it is not uncommon to see a Jspec motor+ tranny come over with a Auto tranny on it.
Note the boost gauge and auto shifter

Typically the gearing for nonturbo-> turbo transmissions are very different. I would try to find an n/a S5 auto transmission. Since japan never had a non-turbo, a j-spec non-turbo automatic should not exist.
Wait for icemark to reply for a more YES/NO answer.
Ooops, i see he already replied.
Icemark, Would the gearing be an issue here?

The flywheel would bethe only issue (you need to get it).
The gearing should be almost exactly the same as the North American spec non-turbo auto tranny. It is my understanding that most of the Jspecs did still have the 3.9 rear end on the auto trannys.
I personally suspect that the auto tranny is the same for Non-turbos and turbos, but have not ripped both apart next to each other to compare.

I agree about mazda's auto's not being bad at all. As much as I hate to admit it, I believe the late 80's, early 90's 626, anyway, the Autos actually feel a little stronger when you floor it. I still would take the manual any day, but of the various cars that I've driven the same model with both a manual and a model with an auto, mazda knows how to make a good auto tranny. I love the AT/EC function of them too. But it's not cool enough that I could sell the manual and keep the auto. finally got rid of the auto last week, actually.

It is my undestanding that the Auto flywheel is a different size than the non-turbo flywheel (since the auto tranny and turbo use the same starter).
I could be wrong on this. I generally try and stay away from auto trannys.
Either way a Non turbo flywheel is a different part number than the auto tranny flywheel which indicates that the standard tranny non turbo flywheel won't work.

OH MAN you had me scared.....I was talking about swapping a regular auto tranny with the JDM tranny..... Mark do you think that the JDM auto tranny is beefed up at all to withstand the turbo power....
As far as nizations comment....obviously you dont own an automatic mazda because in general mazda makes pretty shitty autos and even half *** NA manuals (only in rx7s from what i know.) The 93-97 MX-6/626 and Probe V6 auto are notorious for popping... The FD automatic pops alot but mostly after modds... And from what im generally seeing on the forum, alot of people are popping FC automatics... (including me) Again this is only a generalization not facts but i still would not say that the mazda automatic was a good or strong tranny. -Gabe

The manual transmission car uses a flywheel with a counter weight........the automatic transmission uses a counter weight and Drive Plate. Those are two different things.
You can't one in lieu of the other. Not interchangable. Verboten to even try. They won't mate. Look in your manual or look at http://www.mazdaformance.com/rx7parts.htm
